Dick Vitale's live return delayed due to 'health challenges' and 'physical limitations' caused by family accident

Famed basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale is not expected to return to ESPN next week to broadcast the Duke-Wake Forest game after an accident at his home in Florida.

Vitale announced Saturday that he had been hospitalized after falling at home. Vitale said in a statement that the incident has created new health challenges and physical limitations for him.

“I had an accident at home in Florida that has created some new health challenges and near-term physical limitations for me,” Vitale said.

"Now, I just have to wait a little longer. I'm not sure exactly when, but expect to make a full recovery and will provide an update as more information becomes available. Despite this recent setback, I'm lucky to have family, friends and ESPN Support from teammates.”

Vitale hasn't called a fight in two years as he has been battling various health conditions, including vocal cord cancer.

Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021 and lymphoma a few months later. He returned in the fall of 2021, but later had to leave to undergo vocal cord surgery.

Vitale announced in the summer of 2023 that the cancer had spread to his vocal cords and later to his lymph nodes, leaving him battling four cancers in four years.

He underwent radiation therapy, chemotherapy and more surgeries over the past two years before being declared cancer-free earlier this month.

However, after his latest fall, Vitale needs to recover at least once more before college basketball fans can hear him call another game.
