Hans Bubby, the production company of Dennis Lehane, has won the English remake of the Finnish drama 100 Liters of Gold.
Directed by Teemu Nikki, it solves a serious problem: There is nothing to drink, and the wedding is around the corner. Sisters Taina and Pirkko promised to brew 100 liters of the famous homebrewed beer Sahti. Their new batch was so delicious they drank it themselves - the day before the event. Now they have to "procure" 100 liters by any means necessary.
The film was produced by its "The Movie of Living" and premiered in Finland in March 2025 and quickly became the most popular domestic film of the year to date. Nikki is also behind Finland's "Outhanizer" at the 2018 Oscar entry, and the "Blind Man Who Don't Want to See the Titanic" who won Venice. His brief "all-inclusive" was on display in Cannes in 2019.
"It's fun, outrageous, and related to people living on the edge," Lehaen said. "I handed it to my partner Mackenzie Pietzak, who almost the day I landed in the United States, and she gave in as hard as I did, and we decided to try an American remake."
Previously, Lehane wrote the script "The Drop" for Fox Searchlight based on his original short story and created the Apple series "Blackbird" starring Taron Egerton. His new original series, "Smoke", will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 27.
"When I was sightseeing at the Colosseum during the Roman Film Festival, I received an email from a guy named Dennis. I answered some stupid things and later realized that this "Dennis" was actually Dennis Lehane. Then I called Jani to check if I was dreaming," Teemu Nikki recalled.
"It's great that writers with such high profile are interested in our films. I feel like a fanatic!" added writer-producer Jani Pösö, who shares it with Nikki.
He believes that the film was “local is global” when it was performed in Nicky’s hometown.
Pusus agreed: "The whole world is filled with a place where communities are wrapped around one thing. The best tomatoes in the world, the best football player in the world. In (Finland city) sysmä, that's it Soup. The topic we deal with here is universal: Sometimes you only need to leave to live. ”
Although criticized, the team is not expecting to set the box office on fire.
Nikki joked: "It's not easy for us Finns to get excited. It took them ten years to find our movies and enjoy the humor.
"I think there are at least three things. First, the movie is really good, maybe the best we've done so far. Second, we've been banging our heads against the wall for a long time - and now, the wall has finally surrendered."
This is a live movie made by pictures from Italy and Danish Smile Entertainment. It Alive Films, a Helsinki-based production company, was founded in 2013 and has produced 8 feature films, 3 TV series and 18 short films.
Lehane was rejected by CAA Echo Lake Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobsen Teller.
