Delivery driver found a safe area in O'Hare and drove miles before being discovered

Another safety panic hit O'Hare International Airport this weekend - this time involving a delivery driver who drove into an unauthorized security zone before someone was caught.

His explanation may be shocking.

Travelers in O'Hare will likely be familiar with passengers who see the car pick up and get out. Anyone is told to stop to keep it moving.

The tight boat runs on pickups and gets off, which confuses what happens around noon on Saturday. A Doordash driver drove through a safe area and then someone realized he shouldn't be there.

A source told CBS News Chicago that a delivery driver drove miles along the interior, on a restricted road in O'Hare (probably a cross-country runway) before someone spotted him from an air traffic control tower.

“I just want to say, yes, yes,” said Robert Mark, a business jet pilot and former air traffic controller.

Such incidents are a huge security issue, Mark said. He was asked about how often they happened.

"Luckily, not very often - but I saw it at other airports and when you get up, it's frightening and then go, 'Who is that?'" Mark said

Chicago police confirmed a 36-year-old man “accidentally drove into an unauthorized security zone at O’Hare Airport” while working as a delivery driver.

Police added that they conducted a preliminary investigation and believed the delivery driver was wrong and no charges or citations were filed.

"But now imagine if it was in the dark night, I mean, no one noticed this guy," Mark said. "The headlights almost all look the same in the dark. It could be really bad."

Over the past six months, O'Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago have experienced several safety panics.
