Police said at least one person was killed after hitting several pedestrians and a police car near the University of Delaware campus Tuesday afternoon, involving an unreturned U-Haul rental van.
Newark, Delaware State Police Department said officers noticed a rented U-Haul van parked on the street around 4:30 p.m., a van reportedly "unauthorized use vehicle."
Police said the van was originally for rent but did not return when it expired on March 18.
Police said when officers tried to arrest two suspects in the truck, they fled into the vehicle, drove over the roadside and ran into an apparent police car.

"The suspect ignored the officer's command and exited the parking lot at high speed," the police press release said. "Newark officials did not engage in vehicle pursuits, but stayed in the mall."
Police said the van hit two pedestrians standing on a parked vehicle while fleeing, and then hit multiple parked vehicles and became disabled.
Respondents provided first aid to injured pedestrians. One was declared dead. The other suffered serious injuries. The other three were taken to the emergency room and were injured without threatening lives.
The other three were treated with minor injuries and refused further treatment.

U-Haul's driver and passengers were detained. The driver was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes as authorities respond to the crash.
Newark police said the road will remain closed as the police department’s transportation department investigates the crash.
