From Rihanna and Zendaya to Madonna and Diana Ross, this year’s Met Gala is on the first Monday of May in New York City, with no shortage of star power and head-turning looks.

This year’s event is the theme of the Costume Academy in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Spring 2025 exhibition, titled “Superfine: Cut Black Style.” The exhibition explores the history of black fashion, focusing on men's clothing, sleeves and dandyismism. Celebrities like Colman Domingo and Pharrell illustrate the subject on the red carpet, joined by Lewis Hamilton and A$ap Rocky, co-chairman of Met Gala.

Now, fashion fans can explore the theme with the same name as the museum exhibition by releasing the release of the 2025 Met Gala Book.

The 372-page book traces the origins of black fashion, dating back to early representations in art and literature in Africa and Europe. As more and more black sounds move to America, so do the new dress codes. As the accompanying publisher points out: "'Superfine: Tailored Black Style' traces the complex and vibrant legacy of men's clothing in three centuries of black culture, from today's hip-hop aesthetics and popular street trends to use during Harlem Renaissance and using it during Harlem Renaissance and symbolizes creative and political institutions to make it a symbol of a surprising derivation to make it an excellent faction.

“Organized by key characteristics of Dandyism that resonate across time, including presence, distinction, disguise, and respectability, this fresh interpretation of a centuries-old aesthetic draws on prominent Black voices in fashion, literature, and art,” the book description states, “and shows how the evolution of Dandy style inspired new visions of Black masculinity that use the power of clothing and dress as a means of self-expression.”

The new book is written by Monica L. Miller, professor and chair of African Studies at Barnard College, along with Andrew Bolton, curator of the School of Costume. Miller is the guest curator for this year’s exhibition, which was her 2009 style of Fashion Slave: Black Playboy and Black Absent Identity, which helped inspire the theme of this year’s Met dinner.
