Cowboys hire coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as head coach

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have selected coordinator Brian Schottenheimer after searching outside the organization for a replacement for Mike McCarthy, Jerry Jones told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday. The 10th coach in franchise history.

The Cowboys also interviewed Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who coached with the Cowboys five seasons and served as offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022.

Schottenheimer spoke with Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones and vice president of player personnel Will McClay this week after the aforementioned coaches met with the club. He's close with quarterback Dak Prescott and has good connections with people within the organization, but this will be his first head coaching job.

"Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant," Jones told ESPN. "He's not Brian anymore. He's now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys."

Sources said Schottenheimer and the Cowboys agreed to a four-year contract.

While Schottenheimer still needs to hire his staff, sources tell ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberfus is a candidate for the Cowboys defensive coordinator job . From 2011 to 2017, Eberflus served as an assistant coach for the Cowboys.

Schottenheimer, 51, joined the Cowboys as a consultant in 2022, working primarily with former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. When Moore left for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 after McCarthy took over play-calling duties, Schottenheimer was hired as offensive coordinator.

Schottenheimer's father, Marty, is the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington and San Diego Chargers. As a coach, Marty Schottenheimer made the playoffs 18 times in 21 years and reached the AFC Championship Game three times (twice with the Browns and once with the Chiefs). His 200 regular season wins rank seventh in NFL history.

During Jones' era as owner, the only Cowboys head coach with no head coaching experience was Dave Campo, who compiled a 15-33 record from 2000 to 2002. Jason Garrett served as interim head coach in 2010 before earning the title of permanent head coach. Part-time job in 2011, continued until 2019.

Schottenheimer served as offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, Jets and Seahawks. Before coming to Dallas, he served as the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.

In his 12 years as a playmaker, Schottenheimer's offenses have ranked in the top 10 in points per game four times and in the top half of the league in yards per game three times. His best three years came with the Seahawks, when they ranked sixth, ninth and eighth in points per game under quarterback Russell Wilson.

Although Schottenheimer didn't call plays under McCarthy, he played a major role in the offense. Team sources said he helped jump-start the offense in 2023 after a slow start. The Cowboys scored 30 or more points in seven of their final 11 games and finished the season with the league's top offense in scoring (29.9 points per game) and fifth in yards allowed (371.6).

In 2024, the Cowboys' offense dropped dramatically, averaging 20.6 points and 327.5 yards per game. Despite being plagued by injuries, particularly Prescott's, the Cowboys scored more than 30 points just three times last season. The Cowboys and McCarthy chose to part ways on Jan. 13 after it became clear the length of a potential extension was an issue, according to multiple sources.

McCarthy went 49-35 in the regular season with the Cowboys and went 12-5 three years in a row from 2021 to 2023, but he was unable to continue his postseason success with the Green Bay Packers . The Cowboys went just 1-3 in the postseason, losing two games at AT&T Stadium, including a 48-32 loss to the Packers in the wild-card round when the Cowboys won 16 straight at home. Entered this game as an identity.

Schottenheimer is tasked with leading the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1995 - a 29-year drought.
