McCarthy compiled an 84-49 record in five seasons as the Cowboys' head coach, including three consecutive 12-5 seasons.
Despite regular season success, McCarthy only managed one playoff win in his five years in Dallas.
The Cowboys finished 7-10 last season despite many key players, including Prescott, missing significant time due to injuries.
Prescott spoke about his belief in McCarthy in December.
"Your coach seems to be playing out the last of his contract and (I) almost feel helpless because there's nothing I can do to help him in this situation, especially a guy you trust so much that you believe he's going to be your boss. Coach," Prescott told Yahoo Sports. “Control what I can control and do whatever I can to help and support Mike.”
Prescott played in just eight games due to season-ending hamstring surgery.

"Over the past week, Mike and I have had the opportunity to review various aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and have also spent considerable time discussing the team's path forward."
"However, until engagement negotiations are concluded, it is clear to both sides that it would be best for each of us to move in a different direction."
