Congress should undo Biden’s disastrous energy policies to restore the U.S. economy

If congressional Republicans intend to deliver on our promise of economic prosperity and price stability, we would be wise to quickly undo the disastrous energy policies the Biden-Harris regime has imposed on one of America's most important industries.

President Biden is using his final days in office to rub salt into the wounds of the U.S. energy industry. Most recently, the Biden-Harris administration imposed another offshore drilling ban on more than 625 million acres of U.S. coastline. He used an obscure 1953 law to ban all future leasing in restricted coastal areas, making it difficult for the incoming Trump administration to reverse the situation.

President Biden is not only ignoring American voters and forcing another harmful energy policy after his party lost the White House, but he is also making it harder for President Trump to restore the U.S. economy and mitigate inflation.

The Biden-Harris administration is taking every opportunity it can to raise the cost of fossil fuel energy production—because they know high energy prices lead to inflation and slow economic growth.

President Biden blocked the Keystone XL pipeline, costing thousands of American jobs. He issued more than 125 executive orders canceling leases and halting new energy development. He also banned the development of all new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals in the United States, endangering multiple facilities in Louisiana. His administration is pulling out all the stops or U.S. energy producers will face costly new regulations.

The Biden-Harris administration’s anti-energy policies have driven up inflation over the past four years. As of December, the average American was paying 29% more for electricity and 31% more for gasoline than during President Biden's first month in office. In 2024 alone, Louisiana families will pay nearly $1,000 more to keep the lights on in their homes and their gas tanks filled.

High energy and natural gas prices also make it more expensive for businesses to operate. If a grocery store has to pay 29% more to keep its refrigeration system running and 31% more for the fuel needed to transport its products, the business has no choice but to raise prices on other items. That's why Louisianans spend $1,500 more a year on groceries than they did before President Biden took office.

The only way our country will escape President Biden's high oil prices is if our economy grows rapidly, but we know high energy prices slow economic growth.

President Trump will need every tool at his disposal to restore America’s energy independence and lay the foundation for the future. Congress can help. We should ask the Home Office to approve more lease sales, especially overseas lease sales. The department should adhere to a schedule of at least two lease sales per year. The Biden-Harris administration did not conduct any lease sales last year.

Existing federal regulations also lengthen the permitting process and weaken the capabilities of LNG and oil producers. Congress could reform the bureaucratic licensing process to reduce unnecessary judicial review and make reviews happen concurrently rather than consecutively.

In 2019, presidential candidate Joe Biden told activists, "I promise you, we will end fossil fuels." Now, Americans' real wages still haven't caught up with inflation, and Russia has surpassed us as the EU's largest LNG player Supplier country.

It will take an all-out effort to undo all of President Biden's destructive energy policies, and congressional Republicans should be ready to loosen the handcuffs on America's energy.
