A bill supported by Melania Trump aims to impose strict penalties and guidelines for those who publish and promote revenge porn, namely, to head to President Trump’s desk.
More than 400 House deputies voted for “Take It Down Act,” a bill that represents the acronym for delegates: tools to address known exploitation by pinning technology deep into the website and the web.
The bill was introduced in January by Ted Cruz, a Texas State, and was approved by the Senate in February.
“Today’s bipartisan adoption of Take It Down Act is a powerful statement that we immediately unify the dignity, privacy and security of our children,” Melania Trump said on Monday. “I thank the members of Congress, whether in the House or the Senate, for their vote to protect the well-being of our youth.”
The Act states that offenders will publish a “intimate visual description” of an adult or minor without their consent or harmful intent or both.
Public forums including websites, apps and other online platforms must incorporate a way of revenge porn to ask for their scrub. These platforms will then have 48 hours to delete content.
"It protects young girls and young women, and this is a bipartisan victory we won tonight," Cruz said on ABC News on Monday.
Melania Trump has previously led an initiative for children. During President Trump’s first term, Melania Trump launched the “best” initiative to encourage children to “better on their personal path” while also teaching them the importance of social, emotional and physical health.
The site said the program focused primarily on “wellness, online safety and opioid abuse.” To support the initiative, Melania Trump worked with a task force to address sexual abuse allegations in Native American communities, met with tech companies to understand their protections for young users, and advocated for the increase in addiction treatment centers to provide Support for mothers and their children, according to the government.
“With this critical legislation, we continue to 'the best focus', we are building a future where every child can thrive and reach their full potential,” Melania Trump said on Monday.
