"Conclave", Emilia Perez, "Wicked" and more

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced its 2025 Academy Award nominations on Thursday, recognizing a slate of films expected to dominate this year's Oscar race.

Nominated films include Sean Baker's poignant comedy "Anora," Brady Corbet's ambitious historical epic "The Fauves," Edward Berger's )’s religious thriller “Conclave,” Jacques Audiard’s cross-genre musical “Emilia Pérez,” and Jon M. Chu The wonderful adaptation of Emilia Pérez. evil. "

The biggest surprise in the lineup is Tim Fellbaum's indie thriller September 5th, which was acquired by Paramount Pictures after premiering in Venice and Telluride, beating out Rummel Roth's "Nickel Boy" and Greg Cuedal's "Sing Sing."

The news comes as logistical challenges caused by devastating wildfires in Southern California prompted the PGA of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to extend voting deadlines. The PGA postponed nominations from January 10 to the week of January 13, while the Oscars postponed the nomination announcement from January 17 to January 23.

The PGA Awards are widely considered a bellwether for the Oscars, especially the Best Picture award. In 2009, the PGA followed suit, expanding its nomination line-up from five to 10 nominees. Since then, the association's nominations have become a strong indicator of Oscar success, with an average of 8 out of 10 PGA nominees going on to receive Academy Award recognition.

Last year marked a historic first between the PGA and the Oscars: All 10 of the PGA's Best Picture nominees received corresponding nominations at the Oscars, with Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" (Oppenheimer) was the big winner at both awards shows.

However, this alignment is not always the case. In 2023, only seven PGA nominees will cross over to the Oscars. Films such as "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", "The Glass Onion: Knives Out" and "Whale" failed to make the Academy list, and were replaced by the German war film "All Quiet on the Western Front" and the black comedy "Grief". Triangle” and the resounding drama “Woman Speaks.”

This year's lineup will test whether the PGA's predictive continuity can continue, or whether the added complexity of voting delays and wildfire disruptions will introduce surprises.
