The Dallas Mavericks won the lottery Monday and have the right to choose Duke Freshman Cooper Flagg at the 2025 NBA Draft in Brooklyn, New York.
The Mavericks finished the game with a 39-43 record, and he went to 11th with only 1.8% chance to win the first choice, the fourth lowest odds since the lottery proposed in 1985. They won the lottery for the first time in franchise history.
Dallas failed to qualify for the playoffs after losing the 8-10 matchup, clearing the way for the team to enter the lottery for the second time after joining Dereck Lively II with the 12th pick in 2023.
With the Mavericks’ No. 1 draft pick, the San Antonio Spurs jumped six positions to get the second pick, while the Philadelphia 76ers advanced three positions. The Charlotte Hornets and the Utah Jazz have a 14% chance to win the top pick, respectively, ranking in the top five respectively.
The Washington Wizards, another team with a 14% chance of winning the first pick, beat four spots on the draft committee and will draft with the sixth overall. The Wizards and Jazz are two teams that stand out from the way forward.
Flagg is an overwhelming favorite to be the best choice this year after establishing his Player of the Year. If Flag does hear his name on June 25, the All-American will be the sixth Blue Devils to be selected in the NBA Draft.
