Indianapolis - Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has intensified his injured right shoulder joint in 2023 and will be eliminated in uncertain times in a quarterback battle with veteran Daniel Jones.
Stephen said Richardson missed all three offseason practices this week and will be held in next week’s three-day mandatory training camp. When asked if Richardson would start for a training camp that began on July 22, Steichen was non-trade.
Stephen said the news came close to the trainer after Richardson's practice last week and reported a sore shoulder. After the examination, doctors determined that his Exchange Federation had aggravated his AC power, and Richardson sprained in five weeks of rookie season.
Previous injuries require seasonal termination surgery. That won't mean Stephen said, but Richardson needs a break.
"There won't be a schedule for the bootcamp schedule, but when he comes back we'll relax his throws and we'll go from there," Stephen said.
When asked if the soreness was normal for players who had previously suffered from communicative joint injuries, Steichen said he was not sure.
Richardson was a major setback for Richardson in the quarterback battle with Jones. Richardson has missed 17 games due to two seasons of injury, including a previous shoulder sprain. Last season, the Colts also briefly selected veteran Joe Flacco in two substitutes on Richardson.
Richardson is ranked fourth in 2023 and hopes to be the franchise quarterback for Indianapolis. But his wounds hit those hopes.
Steichen said Richardson was “in a very good position before the injury. He threw it well. The meeting was good. He made good progress.”
This damage is one of Richardson's biggest blows, given the timing. The Colts were unhappy with Richardson's second year of progress last season, and he set out to add "competition" to their quarterbacks and took a $14 million year-on-year contract for Jones.
The former Giants’ first-round pick in New York, accepted the Colts’ proposal that his mindset will have a chance to revive his career. Richardson's injury led to his opening remarks.
"Daniel will get a lot of reps and then we'll see how it performs," Stephen said.
Richardson's struggle on the court wasn't the only factor that prompted them to solve the quarterback position. Eventually, Richardson's record of injury also played a role.
"We can't beat the wall," General Manager Chris Ballard said in January. "We have to compete in this position, because the competition makes everyone better, and then he didn't prove that he can play 17 games." Now, Richardson has the claim again. Richardson lost two games last season after an injury in 2023, and the spasm/acne caused him to lose his last two games.
Sixth-round draft pick Riley Leonard will take second place in Richardson's absence. Stephen said the Colts will not take the quarterback lineup at this time.
