Michael Morales is the new kid in the UFC Champions controversy area.
The undefeated rising competitor impressed the MMA world and established his own championship threat with his recent victory in the Octagon. Morales (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) has quickly dispatched long-time contender and former champion challenger Gilbert Burns (22-9 MMA, 15-9 UFC) during a major event held at UFC Fight Night 256 in Las Vegas. Burns once fought with 170 pounds, and he never did it primarily.
MMA Junkie caught up with the man behind the exciting title contenders, Entram Gym-Coach Raul Arvizu, who has been on the way to the Morales.
Below, you can find a transcript of Arvizu's interview with Hablemos MMA in Spanish, discussing Morales' big win over Burns, his development and potential in MMA, what might be next for his career, and so on.
Alvesu: "Yes, no. Part of my job is not to be nervous. I've been in over 100 UFC corners. I've been in the championship battle. This is not my first time getting into the headlines. I always say the days of fighting, 'It's a great opportunity. I hope we do a good job.' I can say, I'll do my best.
Alvesu: "The strategy was obvious from both parties. The jab was very important. The jab to the chest because Burns changes levels a lot, and he could split the jab and counter with an overhand. So stick the jab out there, draw him in to lessen his power, which Michael did well, and work the basics. The one-two, the three-uppercut, which he connected, defend the wrestling to the death. The plan was to secure the first two rounds with distance, rhythm and speed, and then at the start of the third, all my plans and strategies were not implemented.
Alvesu: "I do feel Michael's career has changed after this fight. I don't think it's that popular, but I'm shocked with the people at UFC and they've seen how hard Michael is. I don't think we can fight for the belt, I don't even want Michael personally to, but obviously we'll fight for the UFC title one day.
Alvesu: "Leon Edwards, I love that fight. I think he might have lined up, but hopefully he doesn't. I like (Geof) Neil. Michael has a killer mindset and if it's up to him, he'll be figjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj of figjjjjjjj of fifc of fiefc of fifc of fifc of fifc. But that's why he asked me to slow down. I've had a championship before and I told him that he wouldn't be Michael's champion at the age of 27. He's in this position himself.
Alvesu: "I think we have a chance to be champions, but it also depends on the department. A lot of fighters could have been champions, but because of a fighter like Jones, Holloway, Aldo, these fighters never became champions. In fact, Belal won the victory.
