Angel City defender Savy King is recovering from heart surgery after she collapsed in the wild at the National Women’s Football League game Friday night.
In the second half of Angels City’s game against Utah Royals, King was taken to Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The doctor who evaluated King found a heart abnormality and she underwent surgery on Tuesday.
"She is now resting and recovering, surrounded by her family, and her prognosis is very good," the team said in a statement.
The Kings issued a joint statement thanking the team’s medical staff, the King’s companions and the hospital’s medical staff for their care.
“On behalf of our entire family, and Savy, we are so moved by our love and support for Angel City players, staff, fans and community and football fans across the country,” the statement said. “We are lucky to share Savy’s good recovery and we look forward to bringing her home as soon as possible.”
Players from both teams apparently shocked the Kings after the collapse in the 74th minute of Friday's game. She tends to be about 10 minutes before she gets stuffed into the car and is bouncing.
Angel City said Kim was taken to the hospital but responded quickly and received further evaluation.
"We thank Angel City medical staff and local paramedics for seamlessly handling this difficult situation," the NWSL said in a statement Saturday.
In an Instagram story, Washington Spirit National forward Trinity Rodman prayed for King and his family, adding: “In any world, that game should not continue.”
The coalition said in a statement that it will review its policies to determine whether changes are needed.
NWSL’s 2025 regulations state that the league “recognizes the possibility of emergencies that may make the start or progress of the game uninvolved or dangerous for participants and audiences. Certain event categories will automatically trigger the league office to assess delays or postponements are necessary.”
The game added 12 minutes of downtime. Angel City won the game 2-0.
King, 20, was the second pick in the 2024 NWSL draft and played 18 games for the club. She was traded to Angels City in February, and all eight games of the season have begun.
