Chris Berman's 50th anniversary on ESPN

The network announced Monday that Chris Berman will stay on ESPN before the company’s 50th anniversary, including Super Bowl coverage for the 2027 network.

Berman signed a postponement that will last him until 2029, when he will become the first ESPN employee to reach the 50-year mark. Berman joined ESPN less than a month after its release in September 1979.

ESPN will cover the Super Bowl from Los Angeles on February 14, 2027. As part of his new deal, Berman will contribute to the coverage. This will be his 45th Super Bowl in various roles on the network. He hosted three pre-match performances at ABC in 2000, 2003 and 2006.

"I never imagined 70 years old and still on our network, which was a sports broadcast icon a long time ago," Bellman said in a statement released by ESPN. "We are playing in the first Super Bowl and now I can be a part of it."

“For an extraordinary half century, Chris embodies ESPN with his clever and fun style,” said ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro. “Boomer’s enjoyment of sports skips the screen, and generations of fans love to ride a bike.

“ESPN is very lucky that Chris has made us better for decades and I’m happy to be able to last until our 50th anniversary. And, it’s more important that there is no studio broadcaster coverage of the NFL than Chris, and having his presence in our first Super Bowl speech is Apropos and makes sense.”

Berman hosted ESPN's pre-match performance for 31 years. His tenure on "NFL Prime Time" continued in the playoffs of ESPN+ and ESPN. He is also a longtime host of "SportsCenter" (SportsCenter) (starting from his 24-year-old 2:30 AM ET version) and has been a key part of ESPN's coverage of Major League Baseball (including 31 All-Stars and 30 World Series) and golf's main champion.

He is also the live host of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s entrance ceremony, which he has held since 1979. His 16th film role, as part of Happy Gilmore 2, will be released later this summer.

Berman turned 70 on May 10, and said: "Thinking about the opportunity and good luck I have now to work here for 50 years, which is two-thirds of my life!"
