Cherryville's Brock Bumgardner pitches without hits

Cherryville - Very cautious, not letting his toes touch the baseline on his way back, a certain atmosphere of confidence Friday night allowed Cherryville baseball's outstanding Brock Bumgardner to let at least one unwritten rule of the sport fade away.

"(Langtree Charter) can't hit me. I'll get this unstrike name," Bumgardner said in Ironmen Dugout, whose team beat in sixth place. "No doubt I got it."

Bumgardner proved his commentator, closing down Langtree Charter's seventh place and gained accessibility in part of Cherryville's 6-0 victory in the NCHSAA 1A playoffs.

“I think in this sport, you just need to have confidence,” said the Blacksmith pitcher. “I know we’re going to hit, I know we’re going to run on the board, once (the Ironman lineup) gives me the lead I know the end.”

Bumgardner completed 104 pitches, which were below the maximum allowed by the NCHSAA rule. He hit 10, walked three people away, and another Lanterry Charter hit the first mistake.

Lions starter Aiden Gelpke was very strong all night long, limiting the Cherryville Deep Cherryville roster to four innings. The Ironman broke everything in the fifth inning, creating a run after Davin Digh Base hit to start the game, and Bumgardner later helped himself on the wall to the right.

“I’m exaggerating,” Bongardner said. "My coach told me that the first court was sitting on the curveball and I absolutely murdered it. I was so excited."

With Bumgardner’s excellent pitch, Kenan Fowler scored 2-4 with RBI and Run, while Talon Dalton scored 2-3 with three-pointers and three-pointers.

"Wear their pitcher toward (Langtree Charter)," Cherryville coach Scott Heavner said. "The view is that their pitching is good, and that's some kind of benefit (South Pidmond 1A/2A), and its pitching really helped us, especially at the end of the season. I'd love to see us succeed earlier, but it's a win and progress in the year, and I'll take it in the year."

Cherryville, the top seed in the 1A West Bracket, will host No. 8 Heathville in the regional quarterfinals Tuesday night.
