Tributes to George Wendt quickly poured in after his family confirmed that the “Cheers” star died Tuesday morning at the age of 76. Wendt, who played the wise-cracking and self-deprecating barfly Norm Peterson, was a favorite of the classic sitcom, earning six confidential Emmy nominations on the show and appearing in all 273 episodes, including the very last scene of the show, which he shared with star Ted Danson.
"I was so upset to hear that George was no longer with us," Danson shared in a statement. "I sent all my love to Bernadette and the kids. It took me a long time to get used to it. I love you, George."
"I'm sad to hear the death of my friend George Wendt," co-star John Ratzenberger said in a statement, with the actor playing Cliff Clavin, a knowledgeable postal worker in the first nine seasons of the series. "Amid the cheers of 11 years, we shared a stage, a lot of laughter and a front seat, one of the most popular friendships with TV. George brought Norm to life with subtle brilliance - this looks easy. It's his gift."
"He is a real craftsman - modest, funny and heart-filled. What you see on the screen is exactly what he sees on the screen, impeccable comedy timing, and a high loyalty to the people he loves," Ratzenberg continued. "I'll miss the quiet moments of our conversation and friendship, which means the biggest. My thoughts are the thoughts with his wife Bernardt, their children and everyone who loves him."
"George Wendt is the sweetest, kindest person I've ever seen," Rhea Perlman, co-star who plays waitress Carla Tortelli in the series, said in a statement. "It's impossible not to like him. As Kara, I often stand next to him because Nome always sits in the same seat at the end of the bar, which makes it easy for him to catch him, beat him at least at least once a week, and I like to do that. He likes to pretend he's not hurt.
Tributes also come in outside the “Cheer” family, with “Sabrina Teenage Witch” star Melissa Joan Hart reflecting Wendt’s guest performance on Instagram.
Hart wrote: “Paradise is a little fun with George Wendt. It’s a thrill to work next to him ‘Sabrina’s few episodes’. “He’s warm, professional and kind, and our cast and crew are gifted in front of him every time. rest in peace! ”
