Captain Cook Memorial will not return to Melbourne Park after repeated vandalism | Victoria

A controversial Captain Cook Memorial was repeatedly damaged.

Yara City voted unanimously on Tuesday to pass the Restoration Memorial, which stands at the entrance to Edinburgh Gardens in the north of Melbourne.

The granite monument was overthrown and graffitied on a long weekend in Australia and is now in the parliamentary storage room.

A council report found that repairs and restoration costs about $15,000 after being overthrown last year and sprayed with the term "Chef Colony."

Over $100,000 has been spent on maintaining the memorial over the past 25 years.

The report described the memorial as “less or meaningless” and said conservation efforts should be prioritized elsewhere. It also noted that the memorial was “controversial in the community, and Cook was a controversial figure associated with the First Nation.” It also points to the “poor condition and structural integrity” of the memorial.

It recommends that you use the $250,000 option to reinstall and reinstall the “Including Truth Mark” memorial.

Yara Mayor Stephen Jolly said the cancellation of the memorial will eliminate annual maintenance costs.

"It's a waste of taxpayers' money," Joley told ABC Melbourne.

The memorial has been vandalized several times since 2018.

In 2020, the memorial plaque had Cook's face on it and was painted under it with the words "shame" and "delete".

Captain Cook's statue was cut off at St. Kilda's ankle, and the Queen Victoria statue near the city's botanical garden was splashed with red paint on the eve of Australia Day last year.

Joley denied that the parliament was succumbing to vandals.

"I don't think destroying the statue of a person from the past...but we can't afford it," he said.

"If we want to keep it there forever, we probably have to light it there (and more). I just don't think the locals want that."

Victorian Prime Minister Jacinta Allan described the monument's vandalism as "deeply rude" and called for the end of the community's division.

"It's disappointing," she told reporters on Wednesday.

The bronze medal belonging to the memorial is expected to be given to Captain Cook, who celebrates the British explorer.
