Cannes Film Festival prohibits nude and lots of costumes on red carpets

Cannes exposed nipples and unruly clothes.

Prior to the 2025 edition, the Cannes Film Festival released an updated red carpet dress code that effectively prohibits all nudes and "large" ensembles. According to the official charter, nudity is prohibited on red carpets and any other areas of the festival. “The enthusiastic team will be obliged to prohibit the red carpet from entering anyone who disrespects these rules.”

Hollywood Reporter Contact the Cannes Press Office for additional comments, and the festival representative confirmed that the charter had just been updated to reflect “certain rules that have been in force for a long time”. The purpose of the update is to "not according to the institutional framework of the festival and the institutional framework of French law," and "not regulate the clothing itself, but to prohibit all nudity on the carpet."

In a purely dress-breaking explosion, stars like Elle Fanning, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have worn many nipples in Cannes in recent years. In 2022, a naked woman was escorted from the red carpet after she took off her clothes in a pro-Ukrainian protest. It is unclear if there is a specific example that has led officials to update the charter, although red carpet nudity has become a hot topic for the stunts pulled up by Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori on Grammys. (As for the large portion, it's hard not to think about the 2023 Oscars, a white dress that's like a cloud that hinders the view of the Dolby Theatre's guests behind her.)

As we all know, Cannes security officials are strict in the dress codes of the palace, especially in the screenings of the charming Grand Théâtre Lumière, which usually hosts world premieres filled with Auteur and A-List. These screenings require black tie and evening gowns - held from 7pm to 7pm to 7pm in the evening - the guidance proposes options such as tuxedoes and long skirts

Controversy a decade ago followed, when several female attendees were turned away for not wearing high heels before Cate Blanchett's screening carol. Movie stars like Emily Blunt Sicariocalling the situation “very disappointing”, leading others to show their displeasure with the unwritten rules that relaxed at the 2015 music festival. Long-time festival leader Thierry Fremaux called it a baseless rumor, understateing the fanaticism.

Still, Fremaux worked tirelessly, maintaining the integrity of the festival by focusing some of that effort on the look, feel and atmosphere of the red carpet. The festival banned selfies in 2015 (Fremaux called the practice “ridiculous and weird”), and security officials have been quick to take action to remove protesters or anyone trying to create scenes for their personal gain.

The new ban on nude and large amounts of clothing is consistent with such code, but it raises two questions: How will dressing requirements be strictly enforced, and will A-List stars and/or models be launched to violate the rules? While “elegant shoes” are needed, giant stars Julia Roberts and Kristen Stewart both took off their heels to glide barefoot through the palace.

Additionally, it is not surprising to see the rules of relaxation for guests representing any partners of brands like Auburn, L'Oreal and Kelin. As we all know, some of the bold name ambassadors of the above-mentioned brands will appear in the palace in large or pure ensembles. This means more eyes will watch the red carpet during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival from May 13 to 24 and wild antics during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
