Canadian coach Jesse Marsch learned that some of his team supporters may not want to go to the CONCACAF Golden Cup due to concerns about difficulties at the U.S. border.

“I can see the fear of anyone who wants to go to the United States in the current political climate,” he said at a Zoom news conference on Monday. “So, I think it’s a sad thing that we have to talk about visiting the United States in this way, but I think everyone has to make the decision that suits them best and what suits them best for them.”

Since President Donald Trump began his second term in January, it has been reported that tourists stopped at U.S. border crossings and were detained in immigration detention facilities before being allowed to go home at their own expense. Canadian Jastine Mooney is an actor and entrepreneur with a U.S. work visa and was detained by U.S. border agents on March 3. She was released after being detained for 12 days.

Return journeys for Canadian residents fell 20% in April from the United States and return trips by car fell 35% according to Statistics Canada.

Canada is the co-host of the United States and Mexico for next year's World Cup. It opens on June 17 against the Northern and Central American and Caribbean titles of Honduras in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 17, before then against Curacao and El Salvador on June 24 in Houston.

"It would be a pity if we didn't get the kind of fan support our team should get from our country, the fans, the political environment, especially if we've achieved a lot in this game and made it to the finals," Mahi said. "So I'm not sure everyone will take action or react to the situation, but I certainly hope we have a lot of support in these meaningful games. I know we'll be in Vancouver."

The CONCACAF Golden Cup will be held at 14 venues from June 14 to July 6, all in the United States.

As CONCACAF's two games played against the conduct of the game officials, Marsch was not allowed to coach against Honduras and Curaçao and refused to play third in the National League against the United States on March 23.

Mexico won nine gold cups, including 2023. The United States won seven times, including in 2021 and Canada won in 2000.
