California. General Rob Bonta won't run for governor in 2026

California. General Rob Bonta said Wednesday he would not compete for the crowded areas of Gavin Newsom's Democrats in 2026, but instead seeks re-election to the state's highest law enforcement office.

Bonta's decision will bring decisions from several high-profile politicians who are said to be weighing their campaign, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, former U.S. Rep. Irvine of Irvine of Irvine and former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra.

Newsom was in the second term as governor and could not run again.

Bonta said last year that he was "seriously considering" the governor's campaign. He told Politico that the news first reported the news, and he decided to continue his current job after Trump was re-elected.

Bonta has become the face of California's legal boycott against the second Trump administration and is addressed in a new executive order on gender, immigration and other hot ass issues.

Bonta recently joined other state attorney generals to sue the government for an executive order to freeze federal funds and seek to end citizenship of reproductive rights.

According to a late October poll, nearly half of voters will likely support her if Harris competes in the governor’s game.

About 72% of Democrats said they are likely or likely to consider Harris, while 8% and 38% of Republicans have no party preference.

Bonta told Politico that he didn't talk directly to Harris about running for governor, but she would be "good".

“If she runs, I’ll support her,” Bonta said. "I've been supporting her in everything she does. She'll clean it up on the spot."

The field includes Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, state school director Tony Thurmond, former state Senate president Pro Tem Toni Atkins, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villara Antonio Villaraigosa and former state controller Betty Yee.

In the same Berkeley/Times poll, a separate question asks voters to select their first and second favorites from the current and potential candidate lists. (Harris was not included on the list because he was still running for president when the vote was held.)

The results highlight the small understanding of the candidate field for most Californians, including some elected officials in the state.

Potter, who hasn't said whether she will run, will take this lead as the first or second choice for 13% of voters.

Two Republicans are said to be weighing the trade-offs, with Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and State Senator Brian Dahle opposing Newsom in 2022 , 12% and the second registered voter's choice, respectively.

Kounalakis, Villaraigosa and Becerra are supported by 7% respectively. Republican commentator Steve Hilton is also said to be bidding, which will be the first or second choice for 6% of voters.

Polls found that Bonta, Thurmond, Atkins and Yee received less than 5% support, while potential candidate Rick Caruso lost the Los Angeles mayor game in 2022, Republican Lanhee Chen, who lost the country in 2022 Controller election.
