California family sued funeral hall after wrong body placed in uncle's coffin

The California family put the wrong man in the coffin, put on the clothes of their loved ones, and even tried to say the family was mistaken for being wrong because of the mistake.

According to KCAL, she said she arrived at the Harrison-Rose morgue in Compton to prepare for burial for uncle, Otis Adkinson, 80, when she noticed another man in the coffin.

"This shouldn't happen," Hunter told the media. "I didn't arrange to see the wrong body there."

"It was a guy lying on my uncle's suit, but it wasn't my uncle," she added. "I just kept looking at him. I thought, 'He can't be dark.'"

Hunter said she brought the issue to the attention of a morgue worker, who initially refuted her concerns and claimed it was her uncle in the coffin.

"That's not my uncle," Hunter said. "My uncle won't get dark...I showed me a picture and she said, 'Yes, you're right, give us a minute.'"

Hunter said she and her family waited for three hours while the morgue fixed the mix before they buried her uncle. It is not clear whose body is wearing her uncle's suit.

“Let them come in and see the wrong body, and for the morgue, denying it was the wrong body, we think it was really the basic standard of care they messed up,” Hunter’s attorney Elvis Tran told KCAL. “They do need to improve their way so they don’t do that to another family.”

Fun Funeral House denied the allegations and was preparing to submit a suspension letter against Hunter.

Hunter said she was still traumatized when she saw the others in the suit she chose for her uncle.

"It's very hurt," she said. "To look at the wrong body, I can still see that guy."

Memphis native Adkinson died on February 28. His family described him as "Good Country Boy" and he likes to fish, grill, dance and watch the Los Angeles Lakers.
