Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United attacker Bruno Fernandes will stay at the club this summer after revealing Tuesday that he rejected a "very ambitious" offer from Saudi professional league team Al Hilal.

Al Hilal has been exploring a deal for Portuguese midfielders as they hope to sign the goal at the FIFA club World Cup, but Fernandez said in a Portugal press conference on Tuesday that he wanted to maintain his highest level and compete in "large matches".

"I will respond and ask you no longer ask me," Fernandez said before Wednesday's semi-final against Germany. "There is a possibility, a month ago, the president of Al Hilal called me to ask me. I spent some time thinking about the future. As I kept saying, I would, if United were to do so.

"The club (Manchester United) said they were unwilling to sell to me, only when I wanted to leave, it was not a financial problem. It was a very ambitious proposal."

According to ESPN sources familiar with the negotiations, Al Hilal is willing to pay about £100 million ($135 million) for Fernandes and has compiled a salary package that will greatly increase his salary.

However, the 30-year-old decided to stay in Old Trafford and he remained on a contractual state until 2027.

"The president is a spectacular person and we never talked about money (initially)," Fernandez added. "Of course, with my agent. Then I talked to my wife and family and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. She has been very supportive. It's easy to change, even on a family level.

"(Al Hilal's Portuguese defender) João Cancelo is there, my kids are used to playing with him in the national team. We are good friends. But I want to keep the highest level and play big games and I have the ability to do that."

Sources in Saudi Arabia told ESPN that Al Hilal is confident of getting an offer accepted by Manchester United in view of the financial difficulties of Premier League clubs.

They did not intend to make a formal proposal before Fernandes gave the green light, and now they have realized that after discussions with their families, he decided not to continue the negotiations.

Head coach Ruben Amorim made it publicly and privately to Fernandes that he hopes Fernandes will be the core of his reconstruction at Old Trafford.

Last season, Fernandez scored 19 goals in all games and played 57 games in all games. Only goalkeeper André Onana participated in more Premier League meetings.

This is the second straight summer of Fernandez rejecting other clubs' progress.

Saudi Arabia and Bayern Munich attracted interest a year ago, and Fernandez signed a new long-term contract with Manchester United in August.
