Shedeur Sanders was the 144th overall pick in the NFL draft, and Cleveland Browns added him to their depth chart in the fifth round Saturday afternoon.

The free fall lasted longer than expected, but Sanders finally found home on day three and began his journey to become the team's starting quarterback at some point in the 2025 season.

He will join the quarterback room with Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel. Deshaun Watson's position in 2025 is at best after rejoining Achilles in the offseason. Watson suffered a ripped Achilles last October.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry revealed his expectations for every quarterback the team brought during the offseason.

"We want every player to play. That's easy," he said.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked how he would ensure each of the four healthy quarterbacks would get a fair shot.

"We've talked about it. I mean I think there are two ways to do it," he said. "Obviously, you can't assign them 25, 25, 25, but we're really confident that we're going to have a plan that's fair for every player and fair for the team."

Brown acquired Pickett in an offseason deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. He served as Jalen's painful backup and received a ring when the team won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in February. He had previously started with the Pittsburgh Steelers after the team chose him in the first round of the 2022 draft.

Cleveland brought Flacco back after going to the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He took over as injured Watson in 2023 and helped lead the Browns into the playoffs. Flacco won the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens in 2012.

The Browns chose Gabriel in the third round Friday. He plays in UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. He had 3,857 yards of passes and 30 touchdown passes last year with the Ducks. He is the finalist of the Heisman Trophy. He also has the FBS record for most touchdown passes.

Berry explained why the team decided to win two quarterbacks in this year's draft.

"I think I could probably say that this program doesn't need to get two runs back. Like I said, like we didn't really take the draft and say it's OK, for example, "Hey, that's our need, we're just going to pick players who need the position." ”

"If this is usually the way you make mistakes. So there's a little flow over the weekend because the board does go differently with your way. Some people expect, some unexpectedly, and ultimately, we do our best to maximize the impact of our choices in the aggregate. And part of the reason you have to do that."

Sanders will officially start later this year, trying to get a starter job and roster. However, this is far from impossible.

"I know I'll be very suitable," he told reporters. "I think this is the first time I'm in, showing respect to the veterinarians, showing them that I'm ready to work here. Showing the coaches and letting them understand that I can work here. So they can actually understand who I am.

"That's what I'm really grateful for, it's people who really see the real me and can't see what could be real. It's what I'm most excited about. Of course, what I'm most excited about is, of course, the staff, the cafeteria (the staff), everything is extreme, and the people there are real.
