The San Francisco 49ers selected Brock Purdy in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he received three all-around honors against the Hurricanes in the 2022 draft at Iowa State. In the NFL, he is expected to be a substitute for the team one day.
However, after Trey Lance suffered an ankle injury in two games in the 2022 season, Purdy forced him to start the move and he never returned the job after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an injury later this year.
Purdy has made appearances in 40 games, earning 67.5% of his passes for a total of 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions over the past three seasons, while leading the team to a 23-13 record in his 36 games. In the second year in the NFL, he played the Pro Bowl and led the 49ers to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Last week, Purdy received a five-year, $265 million extension, and according to ESPN, he paid more weekly than he had paid in the first three years of his rookie contract ($2.6 million).
But Purdy is clearly looking for more money, as ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported that quarterbacks are looking for more than $60 million each year.
"There are multiple meetings between the two sides and I think Brock Purdy's initial asking price is north of $60 million," Scheft said. "He won't get $60 million. He won't be the highest-paid quarterback in the salary structure of the 49ers. Also, there's an idea that maybe 49ers might listen to Brock Purdy's trade offer, which is nobody's interest. There's not so much interest right now. I think what he initially asked for was $65 million."
Scheft went on to say he asked the quarterback’s Needy team for Pridy, and despite their claims he was a great player, they didn’t seem to think he would succeed outside of San Francisco.
That's the narrative that continues to follow Pudi. As the last pick in the NFL draft, playing for Kyle Shanahan and throwing it to Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, people don't believe he can be the team's win, which is why others are willing to step in and wield a solid NFL quarterback deal. They would rather take risks against rookies or high-priced free agents.
Experts and fans will see him in this way until Purdy drags San Francisco to the Super Bowl victory, or goes somewhere else and show that he is still capable (like Jared Goff).
