Brent Venables says the Department of Defense will make a difference?

It's an offseason for Oklahoma's Summers. Most notably, OU has made a lot of mistakes in offense on the offensive end, which has good reason to rank 98th in the country in 2024. But there have been some changes on the other side of the ball.

During the offseason, the defensive coordinator also changed. Zac Alley's season, now he's going to West Virginia. Instead of hiring someone to replace Alley, Brent Venables decided, like when Thanos took the Infinity Gauntlet from Asgard, “Good, I’ll do it myself.” Venables chose to regain the defensive game after giving Reigns to Alley for a season.

He played in Oklahoma after Ted Roof led the defense in 2022. But there is still room for growth. After another season of improvement by the Department of Defense, Carter Bahns of 247Sports asked if verables would make a difference when calling the Department of Defense.

In his work where he asked a question for each team in the top 25, Barnes is uncertain about the change in defensive playback to lift Oklahoma from the SEC downturn.

Will Brent Venables' defensive call make a difference? The only difference in the upgrade of defensive strategy is that the offense involves bigger issues. Venables, which handle drama responsibilities, brings upside, but may not be enough to take OU to the next level. -Bahns, 247Sports

The short answer to Bahns' question is yes. Having three-time national championships won the defensive coordinator named your defensive game will make a difference. There is one of the best defensive ideas in the past 25 years that will make a difference to your defense. But let's hear Venables himself.

"Why should I call the defense? Because I'm good at it and I'm confident about it," Venables said earlier this spring. "We have a great staff. If I'm going to be successful and the players will be successful, the product will be what we want and it will take us all."

Venables is good at calling for defense. He had two different successes at Oklahoma, arguably as the top coordinator for college football while at Clemson.

The defense isn't a problem with the Sooners in 2024, and despite the losses from Danny Stutsman, Billy Bowman and Ethan Downs, it has a chance to get better or better in 2025. This is because Venables has been executing his vision on the recruiting trails and executing his passporting portal to get the best talent in college football.

But this year will be different from last year. Oklahoma's defense will actually get some help from a situation where offense is greatly improved. That's the biggest difference for the Sooners in Oklahoma.
