BMI launches composers lab for aspiring film, television and game composers

For more than two decades, Performance Right Society BMI has collaborated with Sundance Academy to work with young filmmakers and composers in a highly acclaimed composer lab and learn about the power of music in films.

This ended in 2022, when Sundance canceled its film music show with a cost-cutting move. But now, BMI will launch its own composer lab, which is scheduled for August and September, with longtime director of Sundance film music programming Peter Golub being one of its main directors.

Golub, award-winning composer and director of film music research at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, will oversee the lab along with BMI film, television and visual media Tracy McKnight. The program will select 10 composers to attend a two-week online workshop and then conduct a nine-day live intensive day in Los Angeles.

The program, BMI announced today, is “designed to provide emerging composers with a one-of-a-kind experience to foster artistic growth and professional development. Together, Golub and McKnight will guide the finalists through a series of interactive workshops that will culminate with orchestral recording and mixing sessions with the Hollywood Cinematic Orchestra at Bandrika Studios.”

Golub and McKnight lined up an all-star lineup of top film and television composers to serve as consultants and mentors including James Newton Howard, Thomas Newman, Harry Gregson-Williams, Mark Ishams, Mark Isham, Ed Shearmur, Bryce Dessner, Kathryn Bostic, Chanda Dancy, George Taylor Taylor, George S. George S. George (William s.

Industry professionals who have added their expertise to the program include Warner Broucek, President of Music Paul Broucek, Agents Laura Engel and Robert Messinger, Filmmaker Scott Macaulay, Ashley Irwin, President of the Composer and Composer Association, Music Director Julia Michels and Music Contractor Peter Rotter.

“I’m excited to introduce the launch of the BMI Composer Lab and work with my longtime friend and collaborator Peter Golub to shape the next generation of music talent,” McKnight said. “The program will provide participants with an extremely rare opportunity to interact directly with some of the most respected composers in the industry who will share their expertise and creative journeys to get some of the most famous works in movies, TV and video games.”

Golub added: “Working with BMI to curate a program that will help selected artists develop unique voices and take bold steps in their music journey. It is exciting to continue my work as a dedicated educator while launching this new program.”

Lab finalists will announce on July 16 that they will hold online meetings from August 11 to 22 and face-to-face meetings from September 18 to 26. BMI fusion musicians with all music backgrounds are available on May 30 at bmicomposerlab.slideroom.com.
