Blade Trilogy Writer calls for Marvel restart delay: What happened?

David S. Goyer is no stranger to the comic book Vampire Hunter, who wrote all three movies in Wesley Snipes’ original Blade trilogy. He even stepped into 2004’s Blade: The Trinity.

"I will. I've always loved the character and I love him." Goyer said when asked if he would write a Marvel "Blade" reboot for the MCU. "I've been sitting on the sidelines and wondering, 'What's going on in the world? Why does it take so long?' Because I'm a fantastic fan myself, I'm totally confused."

Marvel initially announced its "Blade" film with Ali in July 2019, but development has been tough as several writers and directors come and go over the years. Bassam Tariq was the first director to join the film, but he quit in September 2022 and filming started about two months. Several screenwriters have also been announced over the years, from "Watchman" Scribe Stacy Osei-Kuffour to Michael Starrbury. Recently, director Yann DeMange ("Lovecraft Country") quit the film last June.

Last summer, Feige told Blacktree TV on his “Deadpool & Wolverine” news tour that it was a top priority for the studio, explaining: “I mean, for the last two years we’ve been trying to crack the movie, and the most important thing for us is not to catch up with it and make sure we made the right “Blade” movie.”

type It is reported that in November 2023, the "Blade" at that time had already experienced at least five writers. A familiar with the script changes said the story once turned into a female-led narrative and filled with life lessons. At the time, speculation said that Marvel was still seeking to make the film, but had a budget of less than $100 million. Marvel Studios removed its release calendar last fall.

“We are committed to blades,” Feige told Via IGN shortly after filming the film. "We love this character. We love how Mahershala thinks of him. Rest assured: Whenever we change direction through the project, or are still figuring out how it fits our schedule, we let the audience know.

Snipes reposted Blade in "Deadpool & Wolverine" with a global box office of $1.3 billion. In the video, the sword blade humorously tells Deadpool: "There is only one blade. There is only one blade."
