New Zealand-based sales clothing Black Mandala has won the award-winning horror comedy "Vampire Zombies...from Space!" to gain the right. Leading the Cannes film market.
The black and white genre mash-up directed by Mike Stasko has been a holiday favorite, winning over 20 awards during the impressive holiday campaign, including multiple audience choice awards and best feature honors.
The film, scheduled in 1957, follows a Motley crew member, including a grey detective, a skeptical rookie cop, a smoking grease grease and a determined young woman – their band unites to stop Dracula’s cosmic plan from transforming Marlow’s town into his personal army of Zombies.
“From the depths of space, Dracula has designed his most despicable plan to date,” the abstract said. "A mature zombie outbreak attack prompted the dramatic (and slightly forged) of Colonel Taribi and his troops."
97 Minute Horror Comedy - SCI-FI Hybrid features Lloyd Kaufman (founder of Troma Entertainment), Judith O'Dea ("Night of the Living Dead") and David Liebe Hart ("Tim and Eric's great performance, great performance, great work!"). The main cast include Jessica Antovski, Rashaun Baldeo, Andrew Bee, Oliver Georgiou, Craig Gloster and Simon Reynolds.
Stasko also co-wrote the script with Jakob Skrzypa and Alex Forman, citing classics like "The Blob", "Plan 9" and "Forbidden Planet", comparing the comedic approach of the film to Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein."
"There are 'Vampire Zombies...from space!' My goal is to make the hilarious irony of the 1950s horror movies," Stasco said in his director's notes. “To do this effectively, it needs to work and look at part one first and then carve each scene on your head.”
The festival’s acclaim includes audience selections at the Ravenna Nightmare Film Festival, Best Drama at Burial of the Living Film Festival (where it also won Best Director and Best Production Design), Best Works in South African Horror Films, Best Science Fiction Films at the New York City Horror Film Festival, and Best Canadian Film Festival at the Victoria Film Festival.
The production was shot entirely in Windsor/Essex, Ontario, using locations like the Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village, Essex United Church and the historic Essex Railway Station to achieve the beauty of the 1950s. The film has extensive practical effects from special effects artists Mitch Branget and Sebastien Gaspar-Woods.
