I sleep in the laundry and I'm very upset, I think it's almost mentally ill." "So I thought, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I'm just in pain, kind of like, "Why tomorrow is as bad as today." "So, I just thought I would end it."

Joel's sister, Judy, was a medical assistant at the time and had prescribed her brother's sleeping pills to help him fall asleep before. Joel's first suicide attempt was "deciding to go all out."

Joel was disappointed that his attempt failed, woke up in the hospital and made the "right" the second time. He said he drank a whole bottle of cleaning products "Lemon Oath" and since then, his former best friend, Xiao, took him to the hospital. "Even if our friendship is breaking out, Jon saved my life," Joel said.

Small added in the documentary: "He never really said anything to me, and I could give me the only practical answer to say that Billy tried so hard to think it was because he loved me so much, and that killed him and hurt me so much. I finally forgave him."

After this attempt, Joel entered an observation ward for several weeks, a decision that changed the trajectory of his life. "I left the observational disease, and I thought to myself, you can use all these emotions to guide these things into the music."
