Bill Maher's new stand-up special slammed by liberal media

The liberal media has slammed comedian Bill Maher's new HBO stand-up special, urging viewers to "skip it."

Critics at MSNBC.com, Decider, Salon and Cracked blasted the Jan. 10 special "Is Anyone Else Watching?" for being reframed as "lazy." They also took issue with the comedian's jokes poking fun at far-left ideology.

Decider's Sean McCarthy wrote in his review on Monday: "There's nothing exciting here and nothing you'd see or hear in real time most other weekends, so skip it. "

Maher's special takes aim at the fringes of the left and right, mocking everything from MAGA to "woke" culture. He also took a dig at President-elect Donald Trump, saying he could "blow up the world on day one" and mocking him for having his "ears pierced" during an assassination attempt last year.

McCarthy criticized the comedian for lacking memorable or edgy material, saying it didn't challenge the audience's limits in any real way.

"Mach thinks he's found a comfortable path by calling himself a centrist liberal, and he seems to be just moving to the right because liberals have become 'too woke,'" he said, adding, "That's not a comedian place, so it’s like a place for Americans who have built a comfortable lifestyle for themselves and don’t want to be bothered by anything outside of their bubble.”

"Real Talk: Maher seems incapable or unwilling to listen or learn. Like too many people who are radicalized by social media feeds, Maher's comedy is stuck in its own bubble," he said, adding, "It's a comedy for people who still post on Facebook, still forward email chains, still watch his show."

MSNBC.com columnist Jacques Berlinerblau described the special as "a rather listless mix" in a review titled "Bill Maher Serves Old Hot Beef in New Special" .

"Partly because Maher's stance on these issues is so well known, his quips don't come as a surprise. He also seems unwilling to invest in the skill necessary to make his stand-up material poignant or thought-provoking," the critic explained .

Berlinerblau added that Maher didn't even have enough self-awareness in his special to criticize the fact that he "seems to have turned into an old conservative white guy, talking about Gen Z, new gender categories, EpiPens, and everything else Waving fists." It didn’t exist in 1964. "

Matt Solomon of Cracked.com slammed Maher's special, comparing it to the comedy of another artist he seemed to disdain.

"Every time a podcast host offers him a microphone and a chair, the veteran comedian makes the same lazy argument Rob Schneider makes: that the left is trying to take away his free speech, by everyone but comedians Crazy,” he wrote.

Solomon continued, "He hates victims, but he fails to realize the irony when he cries for all the people who suppress his free speech. (Another irony: Last check, no one is trying to make Bill Maher Remain silent.)"

His comments ended with a plea for Maher to end his stand-up comedy career. He wrote, "Back in May, Maher told Jerry Seinfeld that this HBO special would likely be his last. With his TV show and podcast doing well, it might be time to move on. "After this year, I'm going to stop(") After watching "Has Anyone Else Seen This," I have a question: Bill, can we write this up?"

Maher confirmed to CNN's Jake Tapper that he may soon retire from stand-up comedy, though he insisted he will continue to star on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" ).

Salon.com senior critic Melanie McFarland described the special as a "lazy comedy" and said it consisted of "material that better clowns had composted years ago."

MacFarlane mocked Maher, saying: "Is this breaking news? Maher hates cancel culture, which doesn't exist, and 'wokeism,' which is a burnout right wing that no one can define Ghost. Maher declares his public support for the trans community just as other hacker comics have done, and he delivers the obligatory words that leave the audience satisfied with the banal observation that follows.”

Maher made it clear in the special that he believed Republicans, Trump, and the political far right posed a greater threat to the country because they refused to accept defeat in the 2020 election, which seems to have was responding to complaints from progressives that he targeted the far left. But he added, "I will not be silent on anyone."

"Don't tell me the left hasn't changed," Maher said. "So you can threaten me with whatever label you want. I'm not going to give in. If you do something stupid, I'm going to call you out, no matter what stage you're at. I talk to different groups of people who are in Ideologically unapologetic, independents and non-slobbery Republicans, that’s my district.”
