North Carolina coach Bill Belichick called it a "false narrative" and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, tried to control an interview with "CBS News Sunday Morning" while discussing his new book.
In a statement issued by North Carolina, Berichick said the section proposed “selective editing and stillness, from a few minutes of the interview to propose a false narrative—Jordan’s attempt to control the conversation—which is not true at all.”
Belichick, who worked in North Carolina in December, appeared online over the weekend to promote his book: "The Art of Winning - A Lesson of Football in My Lifetime."
In the interview, CBS's Tony Dokoupil mentioned Hudson, 24, and then asked Belichick, 73, how to meet.
“We’re not talking about this,” Hudson interrupted from the side before Berichick responded.
Dokoupil then turned to her and said, "No?" she replied, "No."
The awkward exchange attracted national headlines. During the narrative during the broadcast, Dokoupil called Hudson "always been around for our interview."
"I have communicated clearly with Simon and Schuster's PR staff and any promotional interviews I attend will agree to focus only on the content of the book," Belishik said in a statement Wednesday. "Unfortunately, this expectation was not respected in the interview."
In their discussion, Dokoupil also asked Belichick why he did not mention former New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft once in the book, including in the acknowledgements. Berichick won six Super Bowls in New England, and Kraft owns the team. Dokoupil noted that Kraft said he "fired" Belichick after the 2023 season. Belichick replied that it was a "mutual decision".
Belichick accused Dokoupil of introducing "irrelevant topics" into the conversation. According to Belichick, this prompted Hudson to speak out.
“I repeatedly told reporter Tony Dokoupil and producers that I would rather put the conversation in the book,” Berishik said in a statement. “This is something that happened several times, and Jordon shared his personal and professional relationship with me, stepping in and reiterating that to help reinvest the discussion.
“She didn’t deflect any specific questions or topics, but just did her own work to make sure the interview stayed on track.”
Dokoupil asserted on the broadcast that Belichick and Hudson were "discomfortable" about their meeting. This made him and Hudson seem to avoid the problem, Berichick said.
"We are open to the fact that Jordan and I met on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021," he said in a statement Wednesday.
