Bill Belichick said when journalist Tony Dokoupil was "surprised" when he was interviewed by CBS Sunday Morning, asking about topics that had nothing to do with his new book - and said the aired section was "selectively edited" to create a "false narrative" that his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, tried to control the interview.
Belichick, formerly a long-time coach for the New England Patriots, left the team at the end of the 2023 season and was hired by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the head coach of the team in December 2024.
In a "CBS Sunday Morning" interview, when Dokoupil asked 73-year-old Belichick how she met Hudson, 24, she spoke - sitting outside the camera - and said, "We're not talking about this." In the segment, Dokoupil said in a voiceover: "It's a topic, neither of them can comment."
"I agree to talk to 'CBS Sunday Morning' to promote my new book The Art of Winning - a football course in my life. Before this interview, I spoke clearly with my PR staff on Simon & Schuster, and any promotional interviews I attended agreed to focus only on the content of the book.
“I was surprised when it came to an unrelated topic and I repeatedly told reporter Tony Dokoupil and producers that I would rather center the conversation around the book,” Belichick’s statement continued. After a few times, Jordon shared his personal and professional relationship with me, stepping in to reiterate this to help reinvest the discussion. She didn’t deflect any specific questions or topics, but simply did her job to make sure the interviews were on track. Some edits are consistent. Some clips look like we avoided how we avoided pall of the Mets pluffe of the plucking plucks of take n of take an of take an of naked n of plucks proffight of plucks.
According to Belichick, the last 8-minute section running on CBS Sunday Morning “does not reflect the 35-minute productive conversation we had, covering a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it proposes selective editing and stillness, proposing a false narrative from the few minutes of the interview – Jodordon trying to control the conversation – which is simply incorrect.
