Big Bear's famous vulture parents Jackie and Shadow are getting closer to empty nesters as one of their two Eaglets flies from the comfort of the nest on Monday.
At about 10:46 a.m., when she jumped down, one of the eagles perched on a branch, flapped their wings and flew away. Sandy Steers, executive director of Big Bear Valley friends, told KCAL News on Monday that the sunny people left the nest while Gizmo stayed.
"I'm glad Sunny has been successful and is flying and has been successful," Steers said.
It is not clear where Sunny also flew, but young Eagles usually return to their nests relatively quickly after their first flight, Steers said.
Born in March, Eaglets is nearly 13 weeks old, making it the best time. The audience of the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam has been looking forward to the moment when the sunny Eagle and Gizmo will fly bravely. The “Fledge Watch” began around May 13 because the vultures were between 10 and 12 weeks when they left their nest.
The sun's flight on Monday is the result of practice day.
A friend of Okura's Gun pointed out in a Facebook post that the two have been slapping and jumping in preparation for the external track on their outside of the nest.
FobBV wrote on Facebook: "Birds show signs of flying when they start trying to flap their wings quickly. Once they are confident, they take off, most likely near the bass tree where Jackie and the shadows have been hanging out.
As of Monday, Gizmo has not left the nest with her sister. Steers said Gizmo is developing slower than Sunny, so it's unclear whether she will be ready in the next few days.
Based on the rapid growth, both Gizmo and Sunny were identified as women. After the escape, both will last between one and three months in the habitat, and FOBBV says they may be in and out of the nest during this time.
"By the fall, they will take off themselves. Since they don't bring the band, we won't know if they're together or how long they've been," FOBBV wrote on Facebook, nor do they know if they'll know each other. The group notes that there is some evidence that vultures can remember, but there is no specific study to verify the information.
Most eagles are about 5 years old mature, with head and tail and bright yellow beak and eyes.
