Ben Mendelsohn

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses the plot development of Season 2, Season 6, which is streamed through Disney+.

Ben Mendelsohn cannot stay still. We are talking through Zoom about his return to Orson Krennic, the villain of the 2016 independent Star Wars movie "Rogue One", the second season of Lucasfilm's prequel series "Andor", and his experience was so thrilling that he kept chatting throughout his London home in London. Emmy winner is not sure when "Ando" creator and "Rogue One" screenwriter Tony Gilroy first approached him to hit Krennic again, but he did know this was before he had a chance to watch the show's season 1, which wasn't a squelch suppression of his enthusiasm.

"Tony just said, 'Can you come back and do a few scenes?" Mendelsohn recalled. "I was like, 'Fuck, absolutely.'"

Krennic rarely appears on "Andor" this season, and punches every time. In episode 1, he secretly meets the Imperial officers to plan for rare minerals the emperor requests. (The reason Krennic pointed out is that minerals are needed to develop renewable energy, but thanks to Rogue One, we know his real work is the creation of Ultra-weapon, Death Star, Death Star. Skarsgård), while visiting a private antique gallery during a luxury party. Krennic laughed at the nature of the rebellion, and everyone around him laughed without realizing that Luthen’s assistant, Kleya (Elizabeth Dulau), was quietly deleting the auditory device in the same room.

In both episodes, Krennic claims his authority to be relaxed and charming - in a stark contrast to Rogue One, in which he is repeatedly destroyed by Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader, eventually evaporated by the explosion of Death Star. As he explained in our interview, Mendelsohn enjoyed more opportunities about his character. He also discusses how Make Ando deepens his appreciation for Rogue One, his feelings about the many realistic historical similarities of the show, and whether it is possible to play the role again.

When did you first come into contact with "Ando" krennic?

Not long ago, not long after. Tony just said, "Can you come back and do some scenes?" I was like, "Fuck, absolutely." "Michael Clayton" is somewhere in my 25 most popular movies of all time. The Krennic and the entire Star Wars experience were a very good experience for me. But I don't know how good it will be. Surprisingly, this made me feel.

Does this sound like before you watched Season 1?

Yeah yeah.

So, you know you're going to be part of Season 2, how did you react to the show?

Oh well, "Ando" is such a great and mature universe. When these super brains decide to deal with one of these genres, such as the horror genre or sci-fi genre, they bring a lot to it. Gilroys as a family is able to do high concept things in a way that is truly easy to digest and fun.

What do you know about Season 2?

Tony proposed this concept, his historical similarities, etc. Then, this is one of the things you can really only get the scene. and then- (Long and profound laughter) - Then, you try to insert it as much as possible.

Wait, what did you laugh at?

Well, the truth is - and I think I'm remembering this correctly - you don't even know everything else going on. I mean, I got their source, but you're doing puzzle puzzles there.

How do you compare what we saw about Krennic in "Andor" Season 2 vs. "Rogue One"?

When we saw him in Rogue One, we saw him at the height of his achievements, but when we also saw him moving forward with the rest of the Imperial marshals, "looks not bad. I think maybe this is actually my department." So he is more animated about it, and obviously, Galen Erso is the creator of Death Star. Although I will never give up on my idea of building the Death Star. Just a line is great.

You'll see him in a more peaceful time (in "Andor). It's still his ascent.

Sorry, is he a "fruit"?

Yes! There is a feeling that he will surrender more and enjoy himself more. He had a better time here. He is doing an operation that he thinks is entirely mathematical. What was completely terrifying was that he was not among the "rogues". Because I think the show is very scary. We have never brought it to that kind of place in this way as we do here. Never grew up and satisfied this way.

Krennic's meeting with Imperial officials, including propaganda officials, in episode 1, has been compared with the final solution planned by the Nazis at the Wannsee meeting. How many of these historical feasibility do you want to see for your performance?

I didn't do research outside of a rough idea. I mean, during World War II, I was relatively proficient. I think the means we are going to redesign in one way or another are what we see time and time again. There is one of the most obvious, most obvious examples of history, but I am too sensitive to the internal integrity of the work to speak out so much that it points to one place or another. But I think for any audience who is sensitive to this, they will see it repeating historically, seemingly infinite.

How does it feel to explore the different dimensions of Krennic? In "Rogue One", he is rarely the most important person in the room, and he is almost always on the back foot, while on "Ando", the opposite is true.

This is very satisfying. This is my request, but I think it will drop anyway. As I said, it’s great to play him as the clear master of the field. It's more fun to do.

In episode 6, we see Krennic in a social situation, with civilians like Mon Mothma and Luthen Rael. What kind of movie is that?

I think it will take longer to find a groove because, Genevieve and I haven't spent any screen time together, but (our character) know each other for a long time. Stellan's character obviously has nothing to do with me, except these passing ships at night. But it was pleasant, and of course, what was really going on on the other side of the room when the tension happened there.

It seems you shot more of the Krennic conversations while the scene was transferred to Kleya trying to remove the listening device?

Yes, yes. We knew it was being filmed at the time, and a lot of it was happening in the background. There are more conversations, which are related to taunts and baits about her uneasy and seductive things and baits, her silly, anti-imperial style, effective derogatory, their derogatory, etc., etc., etc., which is a feeling in the air. He was very aware of the hand he was holding and how much damage she had suffered. When a lot of people speak from many different angles, it’s like you, like you shoot.

Have you re-watched "Rogue One" ready?

Oh, no, no, no, no. Just the scenes and situations are really guiding to explore him in different situations. Apart from the attitude I don’t know, an attitude, or something, my efforts are not special.

I asked because I was wondering if "Andor" transformed any part of "Rogue One" for you?

I think it adds a lot of gravity to "Rogue One" and "Rogue One" have A lot of gravity. But "Ando" puts it in the cube. I mean, I watched the first movie in the movie. I'm eight or something, I've heard (Make a sound of a spacecraft) Going past my top, it blows my head. All my chips entered immediately. When we talk about “rogue one,” I think it’s important for us all, and we respect what it means to us and everything we do to us. That way I know we've kicked a target ("Ando").

I mean, this is very complicated, right? But this is still very, very easy to digest. Now, I will avoid the grandest comparisons, but great writing can do that. Those who sit in the front of the old-fashioned theater, and those who sit in the back – for kids, for adults. I don't know how they did it. I am a 40-year-old veteran of the Australian film and television world. Therefore, you will appreciate the powerful horses. That's it. I'm right away. Not me. It's like, "Wow, look at this amazing creature."

Do you want to know anything else? I know I have silence in some areas. I stomped easily, and I knew this wasn't necessarily a copy of satisfaction. Do you want to come back?

You might be the first person ever to ask me. I'm curious about another thing: Tony Gilroy knows it's always straight into "The Thieves". We all know what happens to Krennich in that movie.

OK, we think We do it. ((Laughed.) Please continue. I just wanted to talk to Bob Iger - just sent a little message to Bob.

That's actually what I want to start. Looking at "Ando", if he doesn't seem to be covered by the Death Star, there seems to be more exploration.

One of the satisfying things is getting people to start ranking him in the villain level. My previous irony about him was that he was the middle manager of the Empire. For villains, this is not necessarily the most attractive resume. But the amount of meat that Tony sprinkled on his bones, I do think the conspiracy that took place within the empire - the struggle of power, something like this - could be fascinating. I mean, look, the simple fact of the problem is the latest application of AI, who knows? James Bond's explanation will never be said again.
