Bemidji's offense explodes, plate 15 to eliminate EGF

Bemidji - A year ago, the Bemidji High School baseball team was unable to buy additional hits in "too many games", according to head coach Jim Griimm.

The lumberjacks won seven in a 15-7 win over East Grand Forks at BSU Baseball Stadium on Monday.

Bemidji celebrated Senior Day, scoring three or more innings in four innings, hitting 15 18 times on Green Wave (9-3), and hitting 10-4 this season.

"It's definitely huge (to commit this offense), especially before the part," said senior Jack Lundquist. "If we can keep this roll, no one will be able to stop us."

Lundquist was 1-0 at the bottom of the first inning, his first RBI was his first link and equalized the score as Eli Kringen. Brody Anderson led 3-1 with two home runs at the top of the second inning, which was a controversy.

First, Cole Schmiedeberg led Anderson 2-1, and BHS first pitcher Kobe Brown threw the ball out of the plate. The home plate referee shows Anderson is gone, but Gansk throws the ball first to Schmidberger, who appears to have died due to a walking ruling, which makes him initially caught.

After an extended discussion between officials and coaches, it was ruled that Schmidberger was safe at first, and Anderson still led 3-1.

Two goals later, Anderson pushed Brown deep.

However, at the second bottom, the loggers got back before Kringen tied the game with RBI doubles. He then scored for the first time in Gunner Ganske's single.

From there, the jack is controlled.

Stonewall Gessner tied 4-4 at the bottom of the third inning, bringing Reece Dokken home and then scoring three times over Lawson Berg. Berg later scored on the pass.

Miles Gish led 7-6 and tripled his hit percentage before scoring on Kringen's single. Ganske took home with Bemidji's third triple, and then Lundquist added another RBI single.

Lundquist didn't finish there, making it 14-7 with two singles at the bottom of the sixth. Gessner added another further scoring hit to raise the lumberjacks' lead to eight.

"After the confusion early in the game, we really focused our energy on the blow and the wild and played the way we needed to play," Lundquist said. "We really just focused.

"It all starts with one person. Once one person opens the door and then the floodgates open, that won't stop."

Despite his unhesitant total pitches on Monday, Geisner remains key in limiting the green wave offensively. He threw 3 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, two runs and three walks, and made five strikeouts while throwing the wind.

"One thing that didn't get noticed is how difficult it is to tilt the wind 20 miles an hour," Green said. "Now, your fastball is not your fastball, and breaking the ball is hard to control. ... Stony came in and handled it, and that was big."

Bemidji and East Grand Forks combined 11 additional hits. Kringen has 5 points, with two doubles and two RBIs. Berger scored 2-4 with doubles and triple scores, while Lundquist was 3-5 with three singles and four RBIs.

"The wind is blowing today, but they still have to hit the pitcher," Green said. "The ball didn't fly out for us, it found the gap. Although in this field, if you hit it on a line and you hit the ball on the gap, there is no outfielder who can cut it off."

Bemidji's six seniors were honored after the game.

“The whole team, they are my brothers,” Lundquist said. "We are all a family. I've been playing with them since T-Ball. It's a great team, for sure."

Grimm took over the group in his junior season after Mike Fogelson, the most winning baseball coach in BHS history, resigned.

“I can’t tell you how proud I’m for having the opportunity to coach them,” Green said. “They uprooted in their junior year with a new coach and a new way.
