Our last star, Bella Ramsey, expressed support for the awards ceremony, and the show offers separate categories for both male and female performers.
The British star, who considered it non-binary and asked to mention it in their/their pronouns, said it was important that “retain recognition of women in the industry”.
Ramsey added: "But where are non-binary or gender-inferior people suitable for this? I don't know."
Ramsey was nominated for Best Actress for BAFTA and Emmys. With the entertainment industry and how awards performances should treat non-binary actors, other rituals such as the MTV and the BRIT Awards have turned to all-inclusive gender neutral awards.
Oscar organizers said they were “exploring” the idea of merging the best actor category last year.
Ramsey told Louis Theroux's podcast: "If people call me an actress, I have a guts 'ugh, that's not the exact right instinct.
"But I just don't take it very seriously. It's not like an attack on who I am. It's just an inappropriate and interesting thing."
Ramsey said they were nominated for Best Actress at the Emmy Awards.
Theroux suggests that a single category means “basically a lot of women won’t be nominated” – as happened when the British canceled the Best Male and Female category in favor of the Best Artist Award, no women were nominated in 2023.
Ramsey replied: “I think this is so important that it retains recognition from this industry.
“I think the conversations in the gender category are very interesting and I don’t have an answer. I hope there are some easy ways to do that.
“I think it’s very important that we have a female category and a male category – but where are the non-binary and gender-based people suitable for this? I don’t know.
“I literally sat, trying to think about the way the answer was, but haven’t gotten there yet.
"You can do this for the character described - like the best performance in female characters. But when and when is it a little worse when there are non-binary characters on the screen? But there are very few characters at the moment. But, where does a non-binary person play a non-binary role, I don't know? It's really complicated." It's really complicated. ”
There is also a move that aims to call all performers actors rather than using actresses, but Ramsey said many prefer to be called actresses "and feel very comfortable with it."
“I always called myself an actor, but I don’t think these words (like actresses) have to be taken away.”
The 21-year-old said they didn't consider using the pronoun until the last of us started in 2023, "This is a problem I had and suddenly I had to choose."
“I feel very stressed about it because I don’t know and I don’t really care.”
Ramsey said they rejected the term non-binary “for so long” because they don’t want to be considered “fashionable.”
"It's just something that's been obvious since I was young. I always call myself a tomboy, but it's not like a boy-like girl. I'm always a little vague, between the boys, to be honest.
"I feel like a little boy, growing up than a little girl, I guess I always feel more masculine, or...yes, I think more of that side."
In the entertainment industry, the question of how to classify awards has been a long-term debate.
Currently, most awards invite actors to the category where they feel comfortable.
In 2022, the royal family’s Emma Corrin identified as a non-binary file, told BBC Radio 4’s Today’s show: “I don’t think these categories are inclusive enough at the moment. It’s something that everyone can feel recognized and represented.”
In 2023, yellow jacket star Liv Hewson, who also failed to make the Emmys, said: "I don't have a single place in the performance category. I succumb to the actresses inaccurately. It doesn't make sense for me to be with the boys."
Others are concerned that gender-neutral categories will lead to undernumber of women. After receiving an all-male nomination for Best Artist in 2023, the British expanded the award's shortlist from five acts to 10 acts.
Transgender actors are not affected by this issue, Elliot Page is eligible for Best Actor, and Karla Sofía Gascón is Best Actress.
