BBC star follows rules after Gary Lineker post

The BBC boss reminds celebrities to abide by the company’s rules and avoid causing “mistakes” as Gary Lineker has drawn new criticism for using social media.

On Tuesday, the host's match that day deleted the Instagram story post he shared in the Palestine Hall, which said: "Zionism was explained in two minutes" and featured illustrations from the rat.

Historically, a rat was used as an anti-Semitic insult, referring to the language used by Nazi Germany to represent Jews. His representative said he didn't know the connection.

When asked if the position violated the BBC guidelines, Director General Tim Davie said: “The BBC’s reputation is held by everyone and when someone makes a mistake, it costs us.”

He added: "I think we absolutely need people to be a model of BBC values and follow our social media policies. It's simple."

The anti-Semitism campaign against anti-Semitism said it was filing a complaint with the BBC, adding that Ryanke “has ongoing ties with the BBC are untenable.”

Charity posted on X: "Nothing can be seen here. Only Gary Lineker's Instagram account, shared an anti-Israel video that states Zionism with mouse emojis."

A spokesman for the British Jewish Representative Committee said: "The BBC should ask him to leave, not allow him to decide his own conditions".

“He made a huge attack on this video – especially his craze for the mouse emoji to illustrate the Zionist craze.”

"While watching and reposting the video, Gary didn't notice the rodent emoji added by the author of the post. Although he had, he would not make any connections. Reposting has been deleted."

Zionism refers to the movement to establish Jewish states in the Middle East, which roughly corresponds to the historical land of Israel and therefore supports Israel's modern state.

When asked Tuesday if he had any comments on Lineker's now deleted post, his response was referring to his personal guidance on his use of social media.

The former England striker has been criticized in social media posts in the past.

In his statement, he said that the language used to promote government asylum policy "is no different from the languages used in Germany in the 1930s, and he was temporarily suspended from the BBC in March 2023.

The BBC's social media rules were then rewritten to speak out that the hosts of the flagship show (including the matches of the day) had a "special responsibility to respect the BBC's impartiality because of their profile on the BBC".

In November 2024, Lineker announced his departure from the game of the day, but he will stay with the BBC to report on the former FA Cup and World Cup.
