A Baldwin Park police officer was killed in a Saturday night shooting that also injured another officer and killed a civilian.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they are investigating two homicides and encountering more gunfire there in a report of Baldwin Park officials responding to possible shootings Saturday around 7 p.m. In the subsequent gunfight, two officers were shot.
Both officers were taken to the hospital - one by air transport - but only one injured survived.
Samuel Riveros, 35, was identified as the dead officer, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center but was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to medical examiners' records.
The latest news from the Sheriff's Department says second official, Anthony Pimentel, was listed as stable and expected to survive. Baldwin Park officials said Sunday he was released after receiving treatment.
In a press conference earlier Sunday, Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert A. López described Riveros as an avid snowboarder and Dodgers fan who loves to travel to see teams play at different stadiums. Officials said he has been an official with the agency since 2016.
"Officer Riveros has provided the ultimate sacrifice for his community," sheriff's officer said in a statement Sunday. "He bravely responded to a dangerous call with Officer Pimentel and his colleagues, fully aware of the risks involved. Officer Riveros serves others, a testament to his unwavering dedication obligations and selfless courage."
The governor's office ordered flags to be hung over the state capitol flags in honor of Riveros.
“We mourn the tragic losses of one of the brave law enforcement officers in California,” Gov. Gavin Newsom and Gov. Eleni Kounalakis wrote in a statement Sunday. "We express our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and colleagues of Officer Riveros."
Officials have not released civilian status as of Sunday morning or the suspect. Sheriff's officials said the suspect detained after the shooting was also injured but stable.

"It's very tragic to have to solve this problem," Lopez said in a press conference when he fought back tears.
Baldwin Park police initially responded to a call from a shooter at 4200 Filhurst Ave at about 7:12 pm on Saturday, according to law enforcement officials.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said officers were immediately shot when they arrived in the area.
Luna said, there are unknown how many guns there are. Investigators took back the weapon.
Officers at the scene also found a man with obvious gunshot wounds in the front yard of the suspect's house, officials said. The man was taken to the hospital and died of injuries.
The Sheriff’s Department is leading an investigation into the shooting.
More than a dozen hours after the shooting, the area near 13500 Palm Avenue remains an active crime scene. Emergency vehicles and investigators flooded the area and the entire neighborhood remained blocked.
Joe Rya, who lives about a block from where the shooting happened, said he was still shocked by what happened Saturday night.
“You’d hear bullets flying,” Ria recalled. "The camera is putting things out. I tell the kids to come down."
He said he lived nearby for 34 years, consisting of modest single-family homes, mostly surrounded by fences in the front yard. Rya thinks it is a relatively quiet community, although he says they hear the occasional gunfire.
According to video footage of The Times review, there are 11 photos on Palm Avenue starting at 7:16 p.m. Saturday.
A homeowner's ring camera caught the shooting and refused to name him, saying the shooting was fireworks. It was not until later that he looked outside and saw police cars flooding the streets.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said his agency will lead the investigation.

He also believes the community is usually “very calm” and he stood in his front yard, just steps from the police video, blocking the next block.
He said he had been living on Palm Avenue for nine years until Saturday.
According to another video reviewed by the Times, six photos were opened next to 7:26 pm when the helicopter circled overhead, at the corner of Palm and Filhurst Avenue.
By 9 p.m. Saturday, multiple law enforcement agencies had landed nearby and were facing the doorway in the area. The Sheriff's Department, West Covina and Elmont Police Department cars are stationed nearby.

At the hospital, the news helicopters spin on it as police cruisers from various law enforcement agencies entered the emergency entrance to the hospital.
Nearby, several officers stood outside. In the evening, a sheriff's deputy escorted an upset couple through the same parking lot. An hour later, the same couple quit. They said they were relatives of one of the officials and declined to comment.
“I express my sincerest condolences to family, friends, colleagues and community members who shot at Baldwin Park yesterday,” Blanca Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) said in a statement. "I also want to express my condolences to the fallen officer and his family. Thank you for your courage and your profound and humble decision to protect and serve the people of Baldwin Park, and you may comfort you easily."
