'Awkward' Jon Rahm stays positive after late PGA collapse

Charlotte, N.C. - With just nine holes and seven shots against ultimate champion Scottie Scheffler, two-time champion Jon Rahm said Sunday that he would get a lot of affirmation again.

"God, it's been a while since I have fun on the golf course with 15 holes," Ram said. "The wounds are fresh now. But there are a lot of benefits happening this week, and there are a lot of positive feelings for the rest of the year."

Rahm secured a chance to win the first PGA title collapsed on par 3 on par 17, when he shot his T-shirt out of the pin and only looked at it when it bounced into the water. But the missed opportunity began on the 13th hole, when a manufacturable birdie putt fell.

In the 14th hole, Ram hits what he thinks is his perfect driving 5 wood. He called it the best shot of the week, but it bounced right into a bunker. He couldn't get down for the birdie and had to settle for the next par.

Rahm hit a perfect 5-shot 5, giving himself a putt, beating the green for the Eagles. However, Ram's stroke was too strong and he didn't turn into the next shot of the bird. Quail Hollow's tough green mile stretch didn't get Rahm back in it when Scheffler made birdies on 14 and 15. He had 16 double bogeys on 17 and 18.

"The last three holes, it's hard to swallow now," Ram said. "If there was a time when it felt like it had slipped down to a certain extent, it wasn't a bird for 14 and 15; it was definitely a mistake, obviously, the completion was poor."

Rahm is a member of Liv Golf’s Legion XII team and has been on the LIV tour with ease. But until this week, he has not competed in majors since he won the Major in 2023. Before that, his best result was a non-competitive draw that finished seventh in last year's Open Championship. Sunday’s eighth place result did not properly describe Ram’s days. With nine holes left, he scored with real shots.

"I think this is the first time I was able to win a major, but I didn't do that," Ram said. "The only thing I think I could turn it off when I was professionally ahead on Sunday, which is a very different situation."

Ram's driver and his putters were doing well throughout the week. He finished in the top 20 in both categories. His goal match was in the top 30 in the field, but he lost his brushstrokes in a short game, and it was obvious when he couldn't play up and down the last five holes.

"If someone sits here and tells you that the nerves are not part of it, they are obviously lying. This is the main thing we do as a professional sport; it is controlling your mind," Ram said of what causes bad fluctuations. "I think it's a little nervous. It can't be pointed out accurately now. I'll go back to what happened. I feel like I'm in a hurry. I don't think the process is awful."

As someone who usually shows his emotions, Ram seems to be working on the results in real time, but he tries to keep it from perspective.

"I've always loved going back and Charles Barkley likes things that keep reminding basketball players. "Am I a little embarrassed about the ending today?" Yes. But, I just have to overcome it, overcome myself. This is not the end of the world. Again, considering this week’s thoughts is much more than negative. I'm really glad I'm glad I'm putting myself in place and hoping I can learn from it and open up another open in the United States. ”
