A new report from the Australian Food and Beverage Accelerator has developed a roadmap to guide local food and beverage (F&B) companies to achieve sustainable packaging solutions.
Titled by the 2025 Sustainable Packaging Trends Report, the document identifies strategies to reduce environmental impacts while aligning with consumer and regulatory requirements.
The report’s co-author, Janet McColl-Kennedy, professor at Queensland Business School, noted that the industry is approaching a major shift.
She describes this transition as a generational change in Australian packaging practices, demonstrating the importance of long-term planning and innovation.
The report is intended to support companies navigating transitions through viable guidance.
The initiative has been supported by the Australian Government’s Ministry of Education.
Funding is provided through the Department’s Trail Blazer University Program, which supports research in commercial and community applications.
McColl-Kennedy said: “The adoption of sustainable packaging is one of the most direct and influential ways Australia’s food and beverage sector can transition to a circular economy.
“Stakeholders in the food packaging value chain will often report difficulties in ensuring sustainable packaging, waste management and circular economy practices.
“This report outlines the latest sustainable packaging trends to provide discussions and decisions for the sustainable development of the Australian food and beverage sector.”
Report co-author Alexandria Gain said the report examines market, industry and government publications to identify 12 key trends that could shape sustainable packaging development.
“These trends are divided into four priority areas,” Gain said.
The report covers areas of wasted in sustainable packaging development, technologies for designing circular packaging, and sustainable packaging solutions.
Gain added: “Our research gives businesses data-driven insights to adopt environmentally responsible packaging while maintaining product integrity and brand value.
“From Australian compliance and global sustainability regulations to cutting-edge packaging technology, the report provides businesses with a balanced way to make informed, impactful decisions for the future.”
“Australian researchers develop a sustainable packaging roadmap for the catering sector” was originally created and published by GlobalData owned brand packaging Gateway.
