Autonomous vehicle technology company Aurora Innovation plans to expand the success of its first self-driving commercial launch and add night driving to its operations.
Aurora said Thursday it will start delivering its self-driving trucks in the second half of 2025 at night and in bad weather conditions such as rain or strong winds. The company provided an update in its first-quarter shareholder letter and also plans to expand its driverless truck route to Dallas and Houston, and to El Paso and Phoenix.
“We want to provide high returns for every truck, so we will try to be more efficient to get as many trucks as possible,” Aurora CFO Dave Maday said on Thursday. “We should double our driving time as soon as we unlock the night. This is our next key milestone.”
In this case, Aurora already uses self-driving trucks to run the cargo, but the human safety operator is behind the wheel. The company said it has completed more than 4,000 miles on a self-driving truck without the driver running the freight driver, launching customers Hirschbach Motor Lines and Uber Freight.
The company has expanded to two driverless trucks operating a day in the week since the launch of Aurora Commercial and said it hopes to operate “dozens of trucks” by the end of 2025.
Milestones and future plans are in line with another major shift in the company: the resignation of co-founder and chief product officer Sterling Anderson.
Aurora shared new details on Thursday in a first-quarter shareholder letter about plans to develop its automated freight services and said it will provide a more specific timeline for key milestones as it expands.

Book nowAccording to Maday, Aurora achieved $871,000 in pilot revenue from its Pilot Commercial Freight Company operations, up 22% quarterly, compared with 54% a year ago.
“At the commercial launch, we will begin to recognize revenue,” he said on a first-quarter earnings call in Aurora on Thursday. “This will include revenue from driverless and ongoing pilot revenue… Through our intentional rollout approach, we expect our 2025 revenue to be moderate in the mid-millions of millions of dollars. For modeling purposes, we expect full-year revenue to be built in turn.”
The company reported $211 million in operating expenses, including $153 million in R&D. It used $142 million in operating cash and $8 million in capital expenditure in the first quarter, ending nearly $1.2 billion in cash and short-term investments. Aurora expects $175 million to $185 million per quarter for the remainder of the year.
In the short term, Aurora plans to provide, operate, maintain and secure its own trucks (available on the Uber freight network). The company is working with PACCAR and Volvo Trucks to build autonomous trucks on a large scale. Starting in 2027 or earlier, Aurora wants customers to buy these trucks directly from manufacturers so that every MADAY can be transferred to the driver and service model and get a "high gross margin".
