Auburn now unanimous No. 1; Duke moves to No. 2

A wild week of chaos and court storms has resulted in dramatic changes to the AP Top 25.

One constant: Auburn.

The Tigers were the unanimous No. 1 pick in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll released Monday, maintaining their top spot in a week in which 19 ranked teams lost at least once, including one in the top 10. 7 teams.

Auburn finished first in the program for the second time last week and won two games without injured big man Johnny Bloom. The Tigers defeated No. 14 Mississippi State 88-66 and came back in the final seconds to beat then-No. 14 Mississippi State. 19 Georgia 70-68.

No. 2 Duke moved up one spot after winning two games last week and swapped spots with No. 3 Iowa State, which beat No. 12 Kansas, but Lost to No. 23 West Virginia. Alabama and Florida State round out the top five despite losing a game each last week.

Only three teams — Alabama, Florida State and No. 6 Tennessee — are the same as they were a week ago. A tumultuous week has left No. 8 Michigan State in the top 10 for the first time this season and No. 2 Missouri State in the top 10 for the first time since the 2022-23 season.

Climbing in Louisville

Louisville has made a big turnaround under first-year coach Pat Kelsey.

The Cardinals won a combined 12 games in the first two seasons, but are playing their best basketball in years. After a three-game skid, Louisville has won eight straight and is ranked No. 25 for the first time in four years. The Cardinals won last week at Syracuse for the first time in eight years and ended the week with a sweep. This is the first time Virginia has joined the Atlantic Coast Conference since 2013.

red storm rises

No. 20 St. John's reentered the polls this week and achieved its highest ranking since reaching No. 15 on Dec. 29, 2014 under coach Steve Lavin. The Red Storm enter their second season under Rick Pitino with wins over Seton Hall and losses to Xavier at Marquette ), ranking first in the Big East. They haven't won a Big East regular-season title since 1992.

St. John's (16-3) is off to its best start through 19 games since the 1985-86 season, when it started 17-2 and finished 20-2. The Johnnys finished 7-1 in Big East play for the first time since starting the 1998-99 season 8-1.

rise and fall

No. 11 Purdue and No. 18 Wisconsin made the biggest gains among teams participating in the survey, each rising six spots. No. 16 Ole Miss moved up five spots after games against No. 4 Alabama and No. 14 Mississippi State.

No. 24 Memphis had the biggest drop this week, falling six spots after losing to Temple and beating Charlotte. Two-time NCAA champion UConn dropped five spots to No. 19 after losing 68-63 to Creighton in its 28th straight home game.

welcome back

No. 22 Missouri moved into the top spot for the first time this season, ending Florida State's 16-game home winning streak with an 18-point win over Arkansas. West Virginia returns to No. 23 in the polls after defeating Iowa State.

Louisville has not been ranked since Jan. 25, 2021, when it was ranked No. 25.

Three ranked teams lost two games last week and dropped out of the voting.

Gonzaga lost to Oregon State and Santa Clara, falling out of the AP top 25 for the first time since early last year. Georgia fell out of No. 23 after losses to Tennessee and Auburn. Baylor was ranked No. 25 a week ago and is out after losses to Arizona and TCU.

Utah State's stay in the AP Top 25 lasts two weeks. The Aggies fell from No. 22 after losing to UNLV 65-62.

Meeting viewing

After Georgia exits the survey, the SEC has eight teams ranked, including five in the top 10.

Next is the Big Ten with six, followed by the Big 12 with five. The Big East Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference each have two ranked teams, and the American Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference have one each.
