At the beginning of the year, more than 40% of the electricity used in Australia's major grids was renewable | Vitality

Renewable energy generation has grown significantly over the past year in Australia's major grids, with 43% of electricity used in the five eastern states and behavior between January and March.

Starting last year’s 39%, the growth was due to a generation of black and brown coal-fired power plants, with its lowest levels dropping in the first quarter, partly due to power outages that are unable to use aging. Gasoline power generation has also declined.

Australian energy market operators say the shift from fossil fuels to zero-emission sources has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from East Coast electricity by 5.1%.

The electricity from rooftop solar panels increased by 16%, accounting for 18% of Feng Shui, and the electricity from large solar farms increased by 10%. The output of battery storage soared 86% as several large batteries were connected to the grid.

The total demand for electricity set a new record for the quarter, mainly due to the fact that people in Victoria and South Australia use more air conditioning. However, as rooftop solar continues to play a bigger role, demand for electricity from large generators and farms has dropped slightly. More than 4 million houses nationwide have solar systems.

The data suggests that the recent expansion of large-scale renewable energy may have ended and that the long-term decline in climate pollution in the power sector may have recovered. Experts say growth will need to accelerate to push the country towards the Albany government’s goal of renewable energy accounting for 82% of electricity by 2030.

The average wholesale electricity price fell 6% from the last quarter of last year, but is still 9% higher than the first quarter of 2024. Wholesale prices in Tasmania have risen sharply, while wholesale prices in Tasmania have risen sharply.

The average price in the eastern continental states varies, but overall it has dropped by 2.5%. Increased coal and hydropower costs are mostly offset by increased use of cheap solar and wind.

Stephanie Bashir, CEO of NEXA Advisory, said the renewable generation and batteries “had a positive impact on system dynamics, wholesale prices and emissions reductions.”

“It is good for power security, reliability and affordability,” she said. “What we need now is ambitious to accelerate this momentum.

"The transmission line is still a missing link in the transition - we have to unblock the progress. Things in the Australian region … we need to make sure we support our region to gain benefits and bring benefits with us on the go. In doing so, we can keep the lights while being the ultimate goal of renewables, becoming the super energy source for renewables."

Greg Bourne of the Climate Commission said the data showed that “power use is increasing and renewable energy is meeting the challenges”.

“As Australia’s wholesale energy becomes cleaner, more affordable and more reliable, renewable energy will continue to break records,” he said.

The Albany government won the office in 2022, assuming that solar and wind developers will continue to be established quickly as long as the authorities have promised to establish borrowed transmission lines and the interstate connections required to leverage clean energy.

By November 2023, as investments in major developments are not the case, Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen announced a plan for taxpayers to fail, known as the Capacity Investment Program, to achieve the government’s 82% renewable energy target.

He said Labor will underwritten 23 GW of new solar and new storage, as well as 9GW of new storage, between 2024 and 2027. Fossil fuel energy is not eligible.

The government promises to provide the lowest income for developers' power generation. If the commercial rate of return is reduced to this rate below this rate, the taxpayer will pay the difference. An auction of underwriting contracts is held every six months.

The capacity investment plan was not originally included in the legislation, but became law in February after the Green Party demanded it in exchange for support from irrelevant bills.

Johanna Bowyer, an analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, said the rise in renewable energy contribution, especially when the sun is high in the middle of the day, means wholesale power prices are zero or negative 18%.

Large batteries now make 88% of their revenue by buying and storing cheap solar and wind power during the day and sell at night when prices rise. The remaining 12% of revenue is earned by providing the frequency required to stabilize the grid.
