Angel City Football Club defender Savy King was released from hospital on Saturday, more than a week after she collapsed in the game and needed surgery to treat a heart abnormality.
King posted a picture of himself in the hospital, holding a heart-shaped pillow and giving a thumbs up on social media Sunday.
“I’ve still discovered how much it means to me to express your love and support over the past few days,” she wrote in the post. “What I know is that without my incredible family, my amazing teammates, who showed up to me and pray for me, the fans, the entire football community, and the ACFC’s outstanding medical team, they saved my life and took care of every step of my life.
Angel City issued a statement saying King had been released from the hospital on Saturday.
King, 20, collapsed in an NWSL game between Angel City and the visiting Utah Royals on May 9.
She was on the court for more than 10 minutes before being taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles by ambulance. After arriving there, the doctor discovered a heart abnormality and she underwent surgery on Tuesday. The team said her prognosis was good.
Both players and fans were shaken by the incident, but the game continued, and the move was widely criticized. The coalition later said it was reviewing its policies.
The NWSL Players Association is the one who says the game shouldn't go on.
"These moments require humanity, good judgment and restraint," the NWSLPA said in a statement. "Any medical emergency that requires life-saving care should end the game. The game should not continue."
On Friday, the league declared regrets that the game would continue to be allowed.
"The health and well-being of the entire NWSL community remains our top priority and in any similar situation, games should and will be abandoned," it said in a statement.
Angel City visited Bay FC in a Saturday night game, its first game since the Kings went bankrupt. Both teams were wearing shirts with a "SK3" printed on the front to pay tribute to King before the kickoff at Paypal Park in San Jose. Angel City captain Sarah Gorden also lifted the King's jersey in the team photo.
"All we can do is learn from experience and conclude that in the future we will make sure our policies and protocols do not allow the game to continue," NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman told reporters during the intermission.
King was the second pick in the 2024 NWSL draft for Expansion Bay Football Club and played 18 games for the club. She was traded to Angels City in February and has already started eight games for the team this season.
