Amazon It said Wednesday it plans to spend about $4 billion between the end of 2026 and the end of 2026 to expand delivery in rural towns as part of the driving force for bringing faster shipping times to more parts of the U.S.
Once the expansion is completed, more than 200 delivery stations will be added, tripling the size of Amazon's rural delivery network, the company said. Amazon added that the move will bring the product closer to customers and cut average delivery times by half.
“At a time when many logistics providers are withdrawing from serving rural customers due to the cost of service, we are stepping up investments to make their lives easier and better,” Udit Madan, senior vice president of Amazon’s global senior business, said in a statement.
When the new facility opened, Amazon said its goal was to create about 170 jobs per site.
The news comes after first-quarter earnings held after Amazon’s bells on Thursday. It also reportedly landed after a day when Amazon drew outrage from the White House, and it reportedly plans to show that the cost of an item was due to tariffs. Amazon said the plan “will not happen” and it only considers such a move on its discount storefront, called Haul.

Amazon has been working hard to speed up delivery over the past few years. After conducting a two-day standard, the company invested in packages on shoppers’ doors within a day or in some cases within a few hours.
It can do this by building a network of large warehouses nationwide and bringing more logistics operations indoors. In 2022, Amazon says it is ready to pass ups and FedEx Become the largest package delivery service in the United States.
The company still relies on operators for part of its delivery, including the U.S. Postal Service, which traditionally relies on shipping goods for shipping to deliver more costly and less dense rural areas. UPS said this week it would cut about 20,000 jobs, partly because it pushed Amazon to deliver more than half.
Its delivery service partner program is increasingly delivering Amazon, which consists of thousands of third-party companies as well as Flex Gig workers. Amazon also recently expanded another program, which was launched in 2023, which invites rural towns and couples stores to deliver on behalf of the company.
