The White House quickly slammed the proposal after the Punchbowl News reported that Amazon will start showing the cost of the product comes from tariffs.
"I just called the president and talked about Amazon's announcement - it's hostile and political behavior of Amazon," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
That's not the only phone call on the issue on Tuesday: President Trump called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after learning of news reports that a plan was lagging to show a rise in tariff prices, two sources said on anonymously, talking about private conversations.
The retail giant said later in the morning that it was not a plan at all.
"The team that operates our ultra-low-cost Amazon runs stores considered the idea of listing import fees on certain products," Amazon spokesman Tim Doyle said in a statement. "This has never been approved and will not happen."
Amazon Haul is part of the company's website, which sells products for $20 or less.
Trump told reporters later that day that Bezos "doed the right thing" after the president called him to discuss reported Amazon plans to show how tariff costs raise prices.
"Jeff Bezos is very good. Great. He solved the problem quickly. He did the right thing. Good people," Trump said at the White House.
Tariffs imposed by the Trump administration — including 10% tariffs on global imports and 145% tariffs on Chinese goods — companies and economic experts warn that prices for U.S. consumers could rise.
Amazon was the second largest retailer in sales last year, trailing only Wal-Mart, according to the National Retail Federation.
Responding to the Punchbowl article, Leavitt said consumers should work hard to buy products made in the United States “this is another reason why we launch critical supply chains at home to build our own critical supply chains and improve our own manufacturing industry here.”
Bezos is seen as supporting Trump. Amazon donates to Trump's inauguration fund and Bezos Attend the ceremony in January. Last year, Bezos owned management Washington Post It has refused to recognize a presidential candidate for the first time in 36 years. As NPR reported at the time, the announcement came after the editorial page of the newspaper edited to approve of Trump's rival Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
