Alex Cora evaluates Boston Red Sox’s first month; “I like where we are”

Toronto - The calendar will be held Thursday and May, Red Sox manager Alex Cora loves what he saw from the ball club in April.

The Red Sox entered the last game of the month with a record of 17-14. They will try to win Game 4 when they play the Blue Jays here at the Rogers Center on Wednesday.

“I like where we are,” Cora said before Wednesday’s game. "I love where we're going. We just have to be patient. It's not a metal pedal. It's not. We have to be very patient and let the group grow the boys. The bullpen is here being a weapon. Now, starters, we have to be patient. We get Gio (Lucas Giolito)."

Giolito will debut Wednesday after the start of the season at Illinois State University (IL) due to left hamstring pressure.

Cora also pointed out the importance of Brayan Bello returning from IL. Bello has won his two starts so far and allowed four runs in 11 innings (3.27 ERA).

Boston ranked 14th in the Grand Slam of the Employee Era (3.97). They ranked 17th in the Starter Era (4.00) and Reliever ERA (3.93).

“We have a good team,” Cora said. “We have a great team and we are competing for a long time.”

The Red Sox were inconsistent throughout the month, especially on the offensive end. But leading batsman Jarren Duran and second-place batsman Rafael Devers broke down on this road trip.

Devers have three home runs, three doubles, four runs, three walks and three strikeouts in four games on this road trip so far, which is 17-6 (.353).

Duran's average has increased from .241 to .273 in the last three games.

When these two hits, it changes the entire lineup.

“You see the difference,” Cora said. “We hope they hit it.”

Meanwhile, third-place batsman Alex Bregman has the best April of his career. He was out with a benchmark percentage of 0.401, .570 hits, .971 OPS, 6 home runs, 11 doubles, 23 RBIs, 22 RBIs, 22 runs, 12 walks, 12 walks and 25 strikeouts.

“Like I said in spring training, it would be very dangerous for these three guys to be together,” Cora said. “They are also three different batsmen.

The Red Sox gained a strong defense from its outfielder and catcher Carlos Narvaez. The infield defense has been shaking.

Despite the inconsistency of offense, Boston ranked first in doubles (61), fourth in runs (158), and fifth in play percentages (.423) and OPS (.757).

“It’s only 30 games,” Cora said. "You're going to go through this kind of stretch. The difference is that the numbers are numbers. … But that's happening around the league. I'm looking at these numbers today and there are some really good batsmen struggling and now struggling. Offense has dropped. In the first month of the season, the offense is unchanged. I don't know it's our season.

"They have done better lately than chasing the court," Cora added. "Although we've worked hard all season or the whole month, keep working hard and keep working. We'll have a hard time with them because in terms of the showdown, it's good for them, it's not good for us, what will we give in 15 times in those days? Look."
