Amsterdam, Netherlands - Francesco Farioli, manager of Ajax, said he was not sorry even though he was surrounded by the runner-up of Eredivisie among one of the biggest titles in history.
Ajax ended their victory with a 2-0 home victory on Sunday in a 2-0 victory over FC Twente, though that wasn't enough to stop rival PSV Eindhoven, who won the title against Sparta Rotterdam 3-1.
The result has left Ajax with unnecessary records in European football history - never a team failed to win the league with five games left.
Farioli, 36, was clearly thrilling at the post-match press conference and had to stop and collect himself as he tried to explore the contrasting emotions of how he performed this season.
"It's a hard lesson to learn, and that's it. I don't have any kind of regrets," Farioli said. "I'm good at seeing before a storm is one of my main qualities. I always avoid things that are far away before it happens. I know who we are and how much it costs."
Farioli arrived in Ajax last June and won the team after ranking fifth in the 2023-24 season. They were obviously favourites, secured their 37th Eredivisie title and entered the final five games of the campaign, but only scored two points from the next four games, which brought PSV back into the game.
"Let's start congratulating PSV," Farioli added. "They should definitely be where we are, where they are - we try to compete and we give everything in our capabilities.
"I'm so grateful to this group of players who made us dream of. November ago, the walls were white and had no lifetime. We asked to repaint and put some colors there. Today it was complicated to learn about what was inside us, but in a few weeks it would be clearer."
Farioli won't invest his future in Ajax. He has two years left on his contract, but has connections to his job at Serie A.
When asked about his future, Farioli said: "Today is about this group of players. There will be no discussion about taking over anything."
Farioli said he was proud of the players because they finished second in Eredivisie and pushed PSV so close.
He was asked what the scene was like in the Ajax locker room, saying, "Emotions, a lot of emotions, you can imagine. It's sad, and it takes a perspective on what we do."
“Eleven months ago, when we had our first press conference, we could feel the last game of the season and compete with our top 30 teams, which would be incredible. If we watched it with a cold mind, it was a great season.
“Ajax had some difficulties a year ago, and today, this group of players brought back some confidence.”
Farioli is clearly thrilling as she walks around the Johan Cruyff Arena full-time. It was a “first” emotion, he said, and that everything that one person tried to give me was full of love and dedication. ”
He added: "I'm with everyone, staff and payers, and there's nothing to pay for. Today, I feel like the tank is empty. I ask the players to put everything on the court. We tried everything, and sometimes everything isn't enough."
