Social media users lashed out at U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland after a video of him celebrating his departure from the Justice Department went viral.
A Justice Department video showed Garland leaving the Justice Department on Friday to cheers and applause from Justice Department staff and other administration officials who saw him off in the lobby. However, criticism of the attorney general on X (formerly Twitter) gave him a very different treatment.
"Good riddance, Merrick Garland - you pathetic hack. @PamBondi will finally restore dignity to the Department of Justice. MAGA!" RNC Research wrote on X.

The embattled attorney general is a frequent target of conservative and Republican leaders who have called him corrupt during the four years of the Biden administration.
Critics have accused Garland of weaponizing the department against President-elect Donald Trump following Garland's investigation into Trump's handling of classified records, including the raid on Mar-a-Lago. Garland acknowledged that he "personally approved" the raid.
Conservatives have repeatedly grilled Garland over her department's treatment of Catholics, including one in which Republican lawmakers accused the Justice Department of refusing to "deliver justice" after attacks on Catholic churches following the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022 ".
Garland also was grilled during a congressional hearing over Catholics' alleged targeting by the FBI.
Conservatives came out in 2021 after the attorney general directed the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office to hold meetings with federal, state and local law enforcement leaders to discuss how to combat what the attorney general called "an increase in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against schools." Federalist CEO Sean Davis also followed the applauding staff, saying, "Find and fire everyone in the photo applauding Garland or crying over his exit."
Joel Berry, managing editor of The Babylon Bee, agreed with Davis, replying: "Fire them all. Clear them out."
